Beautiful Feet Books began in 1984 as the solution to a homeschool mom's real problem of wanting to teach her children history without using a dry and lifeless textbook. Founder Rea Berg was initially inspired in this pursuit by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay’s For the Children's Sake. In applying Macaulay's philosophy along with the writings of Charlotte Mason, she created a living book's approach to the subject of history. Today, Beautiful Feet Books publishes and provides guides, books, and other products to home educators worldwide seeking to create an environment where learning is loved. This literature-rich approach introduces history to students in a way that is fascinating, relatable, and fun.
Small Press Distribution (SPD) forges a pathway to the book marketplace for independently published literary voices often excluded from and underrepresented in the culture at large. Reaching underserved readers with writing from a broad coalition of authors contributes to the vibrancy of our communities, and helps literature to prosper as an evolving and vital artform. Through book distribution, events, and public advocacy, SPD provides small presses and their authors with the reliable and professional network they need.

83. AK Press Inc
AK Press is a worker-run collective that publishes and distributes radical books and other media to expand minds and change worlds. A half dozen of us put in long hours every week because we believe in what we do. We're anarchists, which is reflected both in the books we provide and in the way we organize our business. Decisions at AK Press are made democratically, from what we publish, to what we distribute and how we structure our labor. All the work is shared and it gets done without bosses. No one here is in it for the money (although we do have to pay the rent). Our goal is supplying radical ideas to as many people as possible. The books and other media we distribute are mostly published by independent presses, not the corporate giants. We make them widely available as tools for social movements struggling to build a new world.
84. Blurb Inc
In 2005, Blurb founder Eileen Gittins wanted to do something she thought would be relatively simple: Make a book of her own photography. The “make a book” part was possible, sure, but the costs were prohibitive. And the “simple” part? Not so much. “Why,” she thought, “should anyone have to take out a second mortgage and hire a small army just to publish a few copies of their own book?” One year later, in 2006, Eileen launched Blurb, the world’s first platform for creating, printing, and publishing independent books. The democratization of illustrated publishing had arrived. But these weren’t just any books. They were beautiful, bookstore-quality books on premium paper stock with archival-quality binding. And anyone could make one. Literally, just one. Or two. Or ten thousand. Blurb was one of those amazing big-picture ideas made real: A mash-up of creative freedom with print-on-demand technology. It was groundbreaking. It was liberating and empowering and thrilling. And people like Eileen started making the books they’d always dreamed of, but never thought they could make.
