Scribes and scholars of the ancient world would store a valuable scroll or codex in an armarium, the precursor to the modern bookcase. Just as the armaria protected those early works of learning, we at The Armarium Press aim to preserve some of the oldest traditions of book publishing. The small creatures from the original woodcut by Tucson artist Matthew Grogan that forms our company logo stands for speed (the butterfly) and steadfastness (the crab). During the Renaissance, the earliest commercial printers used these and similar symbols to represent the Latin phrase Festina Lente, which we have taken for our motto. Translated as “make haste slowly,” these words embody the spirit with which we publish our books.

Weiser Books has a long history as publishers of esoteric, occult teachings from traditions all around the world and throughout time. Metaphysics and magick, astrology, tarot, Eastern thought, Western mystery traditions. A new consciousness, received wisdom, information about how to live now in these changing times. Many of our readers remember the Weiser Bookstore in New York City—a gathering place, a place to discover new ways of looking at and being in the world. From that bookstore, begun by Samuel Weiser in 1926 and specializing in esoteric spirituality, arose the Weiser Books publishing program, begun by Donald Weiser, first to reprint out-of-print classics and then to publish new materials. We publish books for spiritual seekers and students from all walks of life and at all points on the path.

We’re passionate about opening new pathways to impact and helping researchers make their findings open to all. Telling the story of their impactful research is essential for our authors and openness plays a vital part in making it happen. We want to work with our communities to create a research landscape where the ‘door is open’ for different content, modern approaches and unexplored subjects. This is essential if open publishing is to reach its true potential.
With this in mind, we have created a number of open research routes that give authors the choice and flexibility when publishing their findings. From our zero-embargo policy on green open access to our gold and platinum routes. Our innovative open platform, Emerald Open Research, offers six gateways aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The publishing platform gives audiences beyond academia – be it policymakers, practitioners or the general public – quick and easy access to research that can create positive change for us all.
