The founding of Schiffer Publishing was a gradual process started when the research for Chester County, Pennsylvania, Inventories 1684-1850, by Margaret Schiffer, was discovered in a box in a basement in 1973. The study had been made at the Chester County Historical Society in West Chester, Pennsylvania for the author's personal interest. The most interesting thing about Bancroft Press is that, as of 2014, the company has survived for twenty-three years without a niche. The more time spent in the industry, the more one understands how rare that is. So many publishers are focused on having a brand – that is, they only publish sci-fi, or they only publish romance. And if we’re talking small publishers, they rarely publish fiction at all.
It’s useful to have a focus. You probably become more of a recognized name as a publisher that way. You develop a certain company loyalty. But – there are a lot of great books you don’t publish.
Dream Publishing was established by Lorna Lorraine, a prolific writer, who at the age of ten was a Spelling Bee champion. She wrote and produced plays, along with her siblings, for entertaining neighborhood children while growing up in St. Andrew, Jamaica, W.I. At a time when television on the island was confined to one channel, there was a lot of focus on education and room to use one's own creativity.
Lorna has held multiple job titles - - drafter, engineer, auditor, -- while raising three children to adulthood after divorcing more than two decades ago. Lorna has written articles for community newsletters, and had her professional exposure as an Editorial Coordinator for a Bridal Magazine. While battling a debilitating illness for several years, at age 50, Lorna made the move from community volunteer to literary entrepreneur.

Lanternfish Press, founded in Philadelphia in 2013, publishes literature of the rare and strange: fiction that crosses the boundary between literary and speculative; real or imagined tales of characters at the margins of history; essays rooted in a strong sense of place; a cabinet of curious Victorian reprints. We seek the grotesque, the alien made familiar, the “I don’t know what this is—but I love it.”
Lanternfish aims to make books and publication accessible to readers and writers who fall outside the literary mainstream, whether in race, sexuality, gender, situation, or pure individual oddity. We're a home for books that defy pigeonholes—and for the readers who love them.
