Chelsea Green Publishing

As you know, Chelsea Green has been at the forefront of publishing books on self-sufficiency and sustainable living for over 35 years.

And yet, like everyone else, we also find ourselves incredibly challenged by recent events in ways both large and small: challenged to turn on a dime and put our mission into practice in entirely new ways; challenged to stay true to our core beliefs of empowering individuals and communities by publishing books on essential subjects; and challenged to do what it takes to support our authors, our staff, and our community, both locally and at a distance.

I am writing to tell you what Chelsea Green is doing in the face of these challenges. While most of our staff is currently working remotely, our customer service staff is available to answer your phone calls and emails and our warehouse remains open to ship books out to you.

In the coming weeks, we will be sharing book excerpts and expert tips from our authors on how to get through this crisis: growing your own food, herbal remedies when store shelves are bare, recipes to nourish you and your family, and other resources for self-sufficiency, adaptability, and resilience—not to mention good old fashioned reads and listens (audiobooks).

Trafalgar Square Books

HorseandRiderBooks.com is the storefront for Trafalgar Square Books of North Pomfret, Vermont—a small, privately-owned publisher of fine equestrian books and DVDs, craft books, and selected other titles. Trafalgar Square’s owners, Caroline and Ted Robbins, moved to a farm in North Pomfret—a rural community of around 200 residents, nestled in the hills surrounding the better-known (and larger) town of Woodstock—in the early 1970s, and established the Trafalgar Square offices and warehousing facilities in part of the farmhouse and the barns on the property. The publishing company still thrives, along with horses and Scottish Highland cattle, on the farm today.

Horse Books by Horse People

Trafalgar Square published its first horse book in 1985. That book was Centered Riding by Sally Swift—a book that helped start an organization and revolutionized how to learn to ride and teach others to ride. Caroline and Ted had received lessons from Sally on their farm, so Caroline—who had spent many years prior in the publishing worlds of London and New York—was the natural choice to help bring Sally’s book to life.

Horses are still an integral part of Trafalgar Square Farm.

Inner Traditions International Ltd

In September of 1970, twenty-year-old Ehud C. Sperling walked into his favorite bookstore in Greenwich Village, “Samuel Weiser’s Inc., Specialist in the Occult, Orientalia, and Metaphysics.” He had become discouraged with his studies of physics and mathematics and later psychology and decided to leave college and pursue his interests in the occult, hermeticism, ancient Egypt, the mysteries of consciousness, and the spiritual traditions of the world. Ehud had gone through the experimentation and radicalism of the 1960s and knew for a certainty that there was more to life than ordinary reality. He was a frequent customer at Weiser’s bookstore, which was, at that time, the largest bookstore in the world specializing in the subjects of his interest.

On that day in September, Ehud decided to ask the owner of the bookstore and publishing company, Donald Weiser, for a job. With Donald’s acceptance of Ehud as a staff member, the seeds of Inner Traditions were planted in the soil of book selling and publishing.

At that time anyone who was interested in researching, studying, or practicing any of the occult arts, yoga, oriental philosophy, and hermeticism was bound to pay a visit to Weiser’s when they were in New York City.

self-publishing for kids

My daughter, an avid writer for her age, was constantly producing story after story and pleading with me to have them professionally published. One day, we decided to collaborate. My idea, her creativity, her writing, my editing...together we completed "The New Kid On The Block".

My younger daughter, unable to write yet, had taken to illustrating. The creations were endless, the characters fun and colorful.

This collaboration between author and illustrator in my own home and the desire to publish professional quality books was the catalyst to Scribblitt™.

Scribblitt™ is a launch pad for creativity where kids grab an idea, and using tools provided and collaboration with other kids, teachers, writers and publishers, take it where they want to go, making their own characters, story and illustrations come to life in a professional product.

I hope you enjoy using Scribblitt™ as much as I've enjoyed building this site. It has been a true labor of love, dedicated to my girls and all young writers out there.

Upper Access Publishing

Our niche is a broad one: nonfiction books to improve the quality of life. We are a traditional, royalty-paying publisher, but on a tiny scale, with no more than a handful of new titles per year. Unlike most businesses, our goal is not to grow bigger, but rather to make sure that each Upper Access title is the best in its subject area

Historical notes

We have been publishing books since 1986. Early on, we learned that small presses had a hard time competing in the marketplace. We did what we could, providing services to other small publishers. We set up a book fulfillment company, stocking books from over 100 other small presses, to make their books more readily available to the public. For several years we published a mail-order catalog called Big Books from Small Presses, with circulation of about 100,000 copies per year. These activities ended as the nature of the book industry changed, other good service providers emerged, and as the Internet made mail order catalogs obsolete.

We also developed an industry-specific business software program, now known as Publishers’ Assistant, to allow small companies to function professionally.

DCDESIGN

Book designer, publisher, writer—Crohn’s/Colitis book, Spin Cycle memoir, To Look Out From poetry collection, public radio commentator; married to musician and English professor, Steve Carmichael; mother of Sam, Emma, and Joe Carmichael. I live in a hand-built, solar-powered home in southern Vermont. Welcome to my website and I hope you enjoy it and get outside!

Cummings moved to Brattleboro after five years in Boston at Little, Brown & Company. Brattleboro had long been a draw for Boston and New York book designers: the quality and customer service at the various type houses was legendary, and The Book Press was a top printer in the industry. DCDesign enjoys a national reputation within the publishing industry for high-quality work, gearing up for success in a new era of publishing with a focus on working individually with authors to bring their books out professionally and with global distribution. We have full- and part-time staff, including editors and proofreaders, indexers, web development, and a burgeoning marketing and publicity team We love traditional typography, but are not afraid to innovate.

Equissentials Press

Equissentials, Inc. was founded in 1992 for the purpose of manufacturing and distributing the Equicaddy, an unusually elegant mounting block/tack box/seat. We have since grown and expanded to include publishing non-fiction horse books.

Our first title, Financing Your Equestrian Activities received rave reviews from a number of equine journals and was one of Tack in the Box's best sellers. The Dressage Competitors' Handbook is our newest release and will be available from a number of tack catalogs for the Christmas season. It is in stock at Equissentials and can be ordered now through this website.

Suzanne Fraser is the author of both Financing Your Equestrian Activities and The Dressage Competitors' Handbook and is uniquely qualified in both fields. Fraser began her equestrian career competing in hunt seat equitation, pony working hunter, junior working hunter, and the green working hunter divisions. She became interested in dressage when she was 9 years old and was fortunate enough to take lessons from Colonel Lewicki (trainer of the Myopia Hunt Pony Club) as a teenager.

Green Writers Press

We are a Vermont-based, global publisher. The term ‘localvore’ applies to our mission, which is to publish books, eBooks, and audio books that will spread a message of hope and renewal. We strive to build awareness to stop the global climate catastrophe.

It is our mission, at Green Writers Press, to spread a message of environmental activism through the words and images we publish. We also publish books which, while not quite related to that goal, speak to our quality of life and the beauty of nature. Printing on demand (POD), and using only FSC-certified papers printed at our Vermont printer, Springfield Printing Corporation, at Thomson-Shore in Michigan, Bookmobile in Minneapolis, and at our Tennessee printer, Lightning Source, we will adhere to GWP’s commitment to preserving and protecting the natural resources of the earth. To that end, a percentage of our profits will be donated to environmental activist groups like 350.org and other groups that the author is part of (social justice groups, etc.).

Our vision is that, collectively, our printed and eBooks will become a chorus of voices of writers, readers, artists, and photographers, who care about the fate of the earth.
