The home of Dog-Eared Publications is a perfect place to create children’s nature books! Perched on a hilltop in Middleton, Wisconsin, we are surrounded by wild meadows and oak forests where deer, wild turkeys, and even bobcats leave their marks.
How did Dog-Eared Publications get its name and logo?
We choose a fun name that reflects our love for both books and dogs. The term “dog-eared" is used to describe a page that someone has turned down to mark his or her place in a book, something we often find in well-loved books. Since we raise golden retrievers, the logo is a golden retriever with its ear showing.
The Story of Dog-Eared Publications and its "Discovering" books for children:
The seeds for the book series were sown back on the first Earth Day in 1970. That year, publisher Nancy Field ("Nan") co-organized the first Earth Day events at South Dakota State University in Brooking, S.D., where she was working on a master's degree in wildlife biology. Having one day a year to celebrate and call attention to the environment was a good start, but Nan wondered how to reach more people all of the time. Children's books seemed to be the perfect place to start.
As proof, Dog-Eared Publications today is proud of their many successful titles.

Atwood Publishing began in the summer of 1997 with the acquisition of the book division of Magna Publications. As a result, we offer some tried-and-true favorites and some exciting new titles and areas of interest.
Our traditional areas of teaching enhancement, student services/academic affairs, and administration continue to be high profile lines with various new titles. To this we've added threads of distance learning/education, semiotics, a new diversity series, and a teaching techniques/strategies series. We also offer some fun book-related products.
In the next few months as the site develops, we plan to offer interviews and discussions with authors, a directory of teaching/learning centers, conference information, and links to other sites of interest.
Sheffield Publishing Company was established in 1984. We are primarily in the business of publishing college texts and supplements in a broad range of disciplines. Some of our titles are reissues of recently discontinued books that still have adoption potential. Others are originals. Some have broad appeal and are promoted nationally to 2- and 4-year professors who teach in the appropriate field. Others are developed from in-house materials and are used primarily at one institution as lab manuals, workbooks, or study guides.
The factor that unifies our diverse list, and of which we are very proud, is availability. Since we are a small company with a commitment to quality and efficiency, we are able to publish books with a modest initial press run while maintaining affordable pricing. We are keenly aware of the reality that students simply will not buy books priced too expensively. Some of our titles are adopted nationally. Even books with limited appeal, however, are important to us as well as to those who find them the best books available for a particular course they teach. It pleases us to be able to make these important books available!

9. JP Media LLC
On August 31, 2017, JP Media LLC purchased Jones Publishing, Inc. in a planned transfer of the company from Joe and Maggie Jones to Diana Jones, their daughter-in-law.
“I have been running the company as president for about a year and it was time to make the transition to the new company. It’s an exciting time and solidifies the future of the company in Iola. We will be here for the long haul,” shares Diana, who has been with the company since 2011. “We will continue to move forward with our same publications and our staff, planning for the future. I am always thinking ahead 2, 5, and 10 years – to what lies ahead in the publishing industry for each of our titles and how we can best evolve to continue to meet the needs of our readers.”
Joe and Maggie Jones started Jones Publishing on March 1, 1986.
“Joe and Maggie built an amazing company and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue what they started,” stated Diana. “This is a solid company, with a top-notch staff.”
JP Media is a melding of the past with the future.
10. Kids Cope Now
In 2013, owner and founder of KIDS COPE NOW, Bill Mulcahy took a tour of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW). Inspired by their truly amazing work, Bill started to dream about writing a book for children in the hospital or going through medical treatment.
It just so happened that in 2012, Bill, an author, psychotherapist and father of six, had published his Zach Rules Series (Free Spirit Publishing, 2012) with two titles: Zach Apologizes and Zach Gets Frustrated with the goal of helping kids work through everyday struggles using graphically presented coping strategies.
Zach Gets Frustrated featured a three step method which Bill developed while working with patients battling cancer. Based on the success of his books and the support of the three step method to make positive changes in his readers; Bill believed that children going through medical procedures and surgeries in a hospital setting could benefit dramatically from a book using the same three step coping method. And thus Zoey Goes to the Hospital was born!
