19. Blackstone Audio, Inc

In 1987, in a small garage in Southern Oregon, Blackstone was born. Founded by Craig and Michelle Black, the early days consisted of a small handful of family members and employees working out of their home, building the business one cassette tape at a time. With a fresh perspective on the reading experience, Craig and Michelle, along with their trusted team, found new and innovative methods to not only produce and distribute audiobooks, but also pioneered creative ways to collaborate with publishers, booksellers, and the audiobook listening community. 2017 marks Blackstone’s 30th anniversary, and the company continues to grow, innovate, and further the ascendancy of the overall audiobook business.

The new publishing venture, launched in 2015, is built upon this foundation. Our goal is to publish groundbreaking books (fiction and nonfiction) by talented writers, and to forge long-term connections with readers, booksellers, librarians, and the overall literary community.

We’re thrilled to be working with bestselling authors like P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast, Shelley Shepard Gray, Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Catherine Ryan Howard, and audiobooks, furthering our commitment to bringing entertaining stories to as many people as possible in the most creative and innovative ways imaginable.

21. Labrys Press

As a student midwife in 1978, I noted the dearth of comprehensive literature aimed at midwives in general and homebirth midwives in particular. Suturing literature for Nurse-Midwives consisted of a few xeroxed pages from a dissertation. References covering diagnostic tests were woefully inadequate to begin with, and almost entirely lacking information about how test results might be impacted by pregnancy or what these changes may indicate.

While still in clinical training, I began writing about the Complete Blood Count and my writing mushroomed from there. When I left school, Rahima Baldwin, founder of Informed Homebirth, Inc. offered me the opportunity to bring what I had learned to other midwives via intensive 5-day midwifery skills workshops offered across the United States.

The writing I had done up until then, with many additions, became the handouts for those workshops. Soon, midwives who had not taken the workshops began to request these handouts, so we printed overruns and sold them through Moonflower Birthing Supply. When those ran out, the requests just kept coming. This was pre-internet, so I got postcards, letters, cards and phone calls asking "where are the books?"

22. One Twelve Publishing

One Twelve Publishing is most notably known for its fine art photographic print annual Diffusion (Est. 2009), which focuses on artfully-crafted photo practices.

Measured by its intent, One Twelve Publishing is a movement to save endangered photography: to capture it in its purest forms, accurately reproduce it in print and online, and distribute it to the world. The film, handmade photography, and alternative process work featured by One Twelve Publishing has been practiced and celebrated across the world for decades, yet now it teeters on the brink of obsolescence. One Twelve Publishing is here to resist that flow in the direction of forgetting; to find those artists who appreciate photography as crafted and who want to ensure that generations to come will, as well.

One Twelve Publishing is a Mission. Measured by its products, it is the distributor of art through means that can be considered on their own to be an art form. The publishing company is known internationally for it’s respected fine art photographic annual Diffusion which focuses on unconventional photographic practices. One Twelve also hosts an online gallery that focuses on bridging the gap between antiquated and contemporary photographic processes called Plates to Pixels.

23. Author Impact Publishing

Imagine what being an author can do for your life, your business, and your clients.

Help you make a system of your knowledge

Give you the status of an expert in the eyes of your prospects, clients, and colleagues

Help your clients to see and make the best use of the value you give them.

What’s the difference between people who like to write and those who hate it? One group finds writing a grinding frustration that takes over their life and leaves them no time for anything else. The other group doesn’t consider themselves writers.

No matter where you fall on that spectrum, I can help you plan your book so that the writing goes easily and fast. If writing a book seems like an impossible chore to you, I can help you get your ideas on paper in only a few hours of your time and still have a professional book, your book, that you can be proud of.

I’m a (nearly) lifelong writer, and I’ve spent the past few years immersed in and writing about the publishing industry — self-publishing, how to get published, how to market your books, and the like.
