40 Top Book Publishers in Oregon (Part-3)
In the fall of 1983, Beyond Words Publishing was formed with the goal to produce the finest photographic coffee table books that had ever been published. We looked for photographers who had a singular passion for their subject matter and our first two books Molokai, An Island in Time and Within a Rainbowed Sea were printed in the summer of 1984. Both books received over 30 international awards including recognition as the finest photography books printed in the world. Our 40 the president, Ronald Reagan, even gave one as a gift to the Emperor of Japan in 1986.
Harry Hoffman, then president of Waldenbooks, gave us our first purchase orders for 10,000 books of each title a year for ten years. Our first partner, Robert Goodman, stayed with the company for a year and helped teach us about the challenges of publishing.
Over the next two years, we diligently marketed our titles, loading up our books driving through Oregon and California selling them out of the trunk of our car. The first store we went into bought four copies and gave us a check.
Established in 2008, Ampersand presents exhibitions of contemporary artworks alongside a curated selection of anonymous found photography, printed ephemera and works on paper by unknown or outsider artists. Committed to cultural preservation and the promotion of work by emerging artists, the gallery serves as a platform for dialogue between contemporary artworks and the printed matter that informs, inspires and in some cases serves as raw material in the creative process. This dialogue is further expanded by our tightly edited book inventory, consisting of both new and rare titles, with particular emphasis on art, design and photography. Our publishing imprint, Ampersand Editions, serves as a corollary to exhibitions, providing a printed medium for artists to expand upon ideas and to extend their artistic vision beyond gallery walls.

At Indigo our mission is to strengthen authors’ words through impeccable editing and design, and to help them choose the publishing path that is best for their venture. We have come together to benefit literary communities with our collective and varied expertise, providing high-quality professional editing, design, and publication management services to publishing houses and independent authors.
The name Indigo comes from the type of ink used with quills in old-fashioned country schoolhouses. The ink was made from the leaves of the Indigo plant. Its dark-blue hue is a perfect color for editing—complementary to the author’s words typed in black.
Indigo started as a firm of freelance editors in 2006. It’s now grown to offer design, ebook conversion, and publication management services in addition to editing. With multiple publishing professionals on hand, authors can rest assured that their book will be professionally edited by an expert in their genre, designed with a keen eye toward readability, and produced with all the latest publishing trends in mind.
Indigo: Editing, Design, and More is dedicated to sustainability in all its various forms. We track our paper usage and replace it by planting twice as many trees.
28. Milestone Books
We are an independent vendor of materials by Rod and Staff Publishers and other publishers. Many of these, including Rod and Staff Publishers, do not operate a website. We are endeavoring to provide online customers with a friendly source for these fine products.
Milestone Ministries was begun by Silas and Martha Martin as a way to put their retirement years to good use by helping to equip parents in their high calling of raising children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. It continues this focus under the management of Joel Erickson, who has been with Milestone since its early years.
Our primary emphasis is on making Bible-based school curriculum available to as many families as possible. We believe that the materials by Rod and Staff Publishers lay a strong, biblical foundation that prepares the child for personal faith in Jesus Christ. The illustrations and examples used in the textbook subject material are helpful in developing a servant spirit and preparing the child for godly living. We also feature materials from other publishers, and though these often have less biblical emphasis, the content is morally upright and consistent with conservative values.
