60 Top Book Publishers in Connecticut (Part-4)
31. Tiger Tales
Barb has been a part of Tiger Tales since 2000 when the company hatched out of its egg. As Director of Sales, she frequently travels around the country and is holding out hope that her request for a company time machine will be granted soon. She and her husband live on a farm in Wisconsin, where they raise cattle, care for two rescue horses (Astro and Dino) and a rescue dog (Roly-Poly), answer to the demands of a cat named Pete, and eat lots of cheese.
Michelle was born with a paintbrush in her hand and creativity in her veins. When it became evident that showcasing her artwork on the neighbors' houses was frowned upon, she decided to take her talent to the children's book publishing industry. She started her own design business in 2005, and finding that she still had unused hours in the day, joined Tiger Tales in 2010. When she's not spending time with her two children, she can be found flexing her muscles in boxing sessions with trainees at the gym.
32. Diane's Books
When Greenwich resident Diane Garrett opened Diane’s Books in a small space on Grigg Street in 1990, Central Greenwich had 7 independent bookstores. Her store is the last 1 standing.
Garrett hails from Sudbury, a nickel mining area in northern Ontario, where her father was both miner and actor. Her mother read to the family every day when they were young. Reading to your child, Garrett says, is critical to instilling a lifelong love of books.
After relocating to Greenwich, Diane was astonished to learn there was no bookstore dedicated to children in the Greenwich area. She felt the need to do something about it and attend to the rest of the family at the same time. “I wanted the whole family to read,” Diane says. “We can’t raise lifelong readers unless everybody’s reading in the family”.
An expert on all things literary, Diane's literary prowess and local celebrity is noticed by many in Greenwich. Flash forward 30 years from the store opening and her formula hasn’t changed a bit, the shop is still bursting with books, her customers keep coming back and her competition has died off.

Fausta and Michael McDermott are attorneys who practice in Westchester County, New York. They wrote the initial version of The Concert Hall Cats in 1991, before the birth of their four sons, Joseph, William and twins, John and Philip.
During high school, Joseph demonstrated artistic gifts, which have been developed and honed through the patient instruction of artist, Alan Reingold. Joseph wanted to help his parents realize their dream of sharing The Concert Hall Cats with many children, so he illustrated this story of love, hope, and survival.
Joseph graduated with a major in Peace and Conflict Studies from Manhattan College (B.A., Class of 2015). After graduation, Joseph accepted a position with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Situated in Riverdale, New York, Manhattan College is also the alma mater of Michael (B.A., Class of 1981) and Fausta (B.A., Class of 1982).
The models for Joseph’s illustrations incorporate five generations of family members including his brothers.
