Founded by Walter Zacharius

Walter Zacharius co-founded Kensington Publishing Corp. in 1974, and has been the company’s president and chief executive officer since then. He has also served as chairman emeritus of the company.

He grew up in Brooklyn, New York and aspired to be a publisher from an early age. However, World War II intervened, and Zacharius spent two years in the Army before he was discharged. He attended school on a GI Bill, accumulating more than 200 credit hours at various colleges before he was able to get a degree and pick a major.

In 1947 he began working in the circulation department of McFadden Publishing, and then moved on to Popular Library Book, Inc., and American Mercury, Inc. He was later a circulation director for Ace News Company.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Zacharius published a number of romance novels in paperback. His Zebra Books imprint was a popular choice for readers looking for affordable paperbacks, and he helped to expand the genre in bookstores.

The company’s sales force expanded, and the company also started selling its titles in Wal-Mart stores. In addition to the Precious Gem Romance label, the company created a line of hardcover romances for the Books-A-Million chain.

Kensington began releasing new books in the 1990s and continued to expand its publishing roster. The company added an erotic romance imprint, Brava and Aphrodisia, as well as a Dafina line targeted at the African-American young-adult market.
