Flashlight Press Review - Get Your Freebie From the Small Publishing House

If you’re looking for a small publishing house that accepts unique and captivating children’s books, Flashlight Press may be the right fit. They only publish two or four books a year, and they look for quality over quantity.

They’re accepting submissions of children’s books that have a universal theme, are age-appropriate and deal with family or social situations. Their submission guidelines are here, but the best way to submit is via email with a query letter attached.

Getting Started

Flashlight Press publishes fictional children’s picture books targeting 4-8 year olds. Their books focus on social and family situations. They accept submissions in any genre, as long as it is written and illustrated for children. They prefer books that are between 500-1,000 words in length. To submit to Flashlight Press, you will need to email a query letter that includes your full manuscript. You will then receive a reply within a month.

In addition to the usual methods for turning on the flashlight, you can also use Android 13’s Quick Settings tile or say “Flashlight” with Google Assistant. The latter method is especially useful when you are in a dark place and want to quickly turn on your phone’s flashlight. To use this method, tap the Quick Settings tile and select “Flashlight.” You can even double-tap the back of your device to bring up the Assistant. This works with any app that supports the “Quick Settings” tile.

Submission Guidelines

If you want to stay out of the slush pile, it’s important to follow the publishing house’s submission guidelines. Failure to do so could mean your manuscript gets tossed without ever being read!

Flashlight Press is a relatively new publisher that is seeking picture books that explore and illuminate the funny and touching moments of family situations and social interactions through captivating writing and outstanding illustrations. Their children’s books target 4-8 year olds and are less than 1,000 words long.

The company publishes two to four books per year. They’re interested in fiction, nonfiction and graphic novels. They also have an imprint for workbooks and flashcards.

Unlike many other children’s publishers, they don’t require previous publishing experience or an agent. They prefer email submissions and buy worldwide rights to your manuscript.

You can send your manuscript to the editor by e-mail, attaching it as a Word document. They’ll review your submission within a month and will reply to you if they’re interested in working with you.

They’re open to submissions from January 1st through March 31st only. They’re looking for stories that speak to BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ kids (ages 4-10), as well as stories that address issues of mental health and disability.

The company is focused on cultural diversity, mindfulness, social justice, nature and science, and it produces award-winning picture books.

Their submission guidelines state that they’re only accepting unsolicited submissions from a diverse group of authors and creators, including people of color, members of the LGBTQ community, Latinx authors and artists, indigenous artists and writers, those with disabilities, and minority religions.

They publish fiction and nonfiction board books, early readers, middle-grade fiction and nonfiction, and young adult novels. Their nonfiction often focuses on nature, science, math, history, biography, the arts, and more. They also publish workbooks and flashcards for students ages preschool to middle school.
