About Us

John Wiley & Sons is a world-leading publisher of research and education products and services. We provide peer-reviewed scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishing, content platforms, and related services to a broad range of academic, professional, and corporate customers around the world.

Our primary product areas include scientific, technical and medical (STM) books, journals and databases; educational books, including college textbooks, for undergraduates and graduates; professional books; and subscription services for scientists and academics. We also offer educational software, e-books, online courses, and learning resources.

Founded in 1807, John Wiley & Sons is one of the oldest and most prestigious publishers in the United States. During the 20th century, we expanded our business through acquisitions, strategic alliances and growing emphasis on electronic distribution.

The early 1990s marked a new era for the company, with a new management team and a sweeping strategy to reclaim its fortunes and restore its place as one of America's premier publishing companies. During this time, the company embarked on a series of acquisitions that dramatically increased its presence in both scientific and academic publishing.

While many of these acquisitions were small, a number of them were significant, especially those involving the U.K.-based Pearson PLC and its Jossey-Bass unit, which provided Wiley with professional/trade publishing titles in a variety of business, psychology, education, health, and finance fields. In addition, the company purchased VCH Publishing Group, a German technical publisher.

This purchase, which significantly boosted the company's professional/trade division, helped to fuel growth in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Other notable purchases included Alan R. Liss, Inc., which added more than 100 titles to John Wiley & Sons' scientific/technical portfolio, and a diversified business publisher called Ronald Press that added business and accounting titles to the company's backlist.

During this period, the company also launched a number of new business lines that signaled the company's intention to expand into more modern markets. These ventures included a foray into nonbook sales, such as the sale of pencils, school slates and violins, along with stereoscopic equipment and pictures.

Wiley Author Services

Wiley Author Services is here to support authors at every stage of their publishing journey - from submission and acceptance, through to publication and promotion. We offer expert editorial assistance, including English language editing, translation, manuscript formatting, figure illustration and graphical abstract design - as well as a wide range of resources to help you prepare your article.

Wiley Open Access journals publish articles under a Creative Commons license, which means you retain the copyright to your work and the public is allowed to reuse it under a variety of conditions. This enables you to comply with funder mandates that require your article to be published under a CC-BY license.

Once you’ve submitted your article to a Wiley journal, it will undergo a thorough peer review process. This will be conducted by at least two appropriately qualified experts in your field selected by the journal’s Editor-in-Chief or a member of the Editorial Board. Upon review, the editors will decide whether your article meets the requirements of the journal and should be accepted for publication.

The Editorial Office will provide you with a copy of the journal’s Copyright Transfer Agreement or Copyright & Licensing Agreement (CTA or ELA), which you should complete, sign and date. Please be sure to indicate whether you own the copyright in your article or are an employee or student of your institution. If you are an employee, you must ensure that all members of your team have signed the CTA or ELA on your behalf, with additional signatures attached separately if necessary.

Alternatively, you can submit your article directly to a Wiley Open Access journal through our Manuscript Transfer Program. This will automatically transfer the paper and all reviews to the appropriate journal, which will consider the reviewers’ comments in light of your original article.

Many of our subscription-based journals now offer a hybrid open access option, which allows you to make your article available to the world immediately after publication. This means that your article will be made available on the journal website, where it can be accessed by anyone, anytime, anywhere, for free. For more information, see our How to Order Hybrid Open Access page.
