The Macmillan Story

Macmillan Publishers is an international company whose family roots are deeply rooted in the world of literature. It was founded by brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan in 1843. The book covers the history of the company from its humble beginnings to the current state of the business and features personal anecdotes from people who have worked at Macmillan throughout the years.

The book starts with Daniel and Alexander Macmillan’s childhood in Scotland, their early careers in the book trade and the development of the company as well as their relationship with authors and poets such as Charles Kingsley, Tennyson, Matthew Arnold and Thomas Hardy. It also retraces the difficulties faced by the company as it expanded and developed into a global enterprise.

It was during this time that Alexander Macmillan took the opportunity to publish his own works and he became a prolific author with his work spanning several genres including science, poetry, fiction, biography and social history. He also established an extensive network of publishers which enabled him to distribute his work to an audience across the globe.

In 1843, the Macmillan brothers opened a bookshop in London at 57 Aldersgate Street. In a few months they moved their business to 17 Trinity Street, Cambridge and soon after the publishing side of the company began to grow as well.

As the company continued to expand, its publishing department grew rapidly and soon the brothers were able to hire many talented authors. They published books for children and adults alike, as well as magazines, journals, and reference works.

They were a great publisher of educational texts and their list includes many classics such as Nesfield’s Manual of English Grammar, the Science Primers series and The Practitioner for the medical profession. They are also well known for publishing Nature, a prestigious scientific journal which continues to be read around the world.

In the late 1980s, Macmillan had a strong core of educational publishing and information service companies that are still intact today. However, the collapse of Maxwell’s empire has placed the company under bankruptcy and its future status remains uncertain.
