I am a university student currently pursuing an undergraduate double major in English and Linguistics, and I also recently completed a 5-week immersive study abroad program where I studied English literature. These along with a childhood filled with drafts of novels and short stories have drawn my attention and passion to a career in editing and publishing.
I was inspired to pursue an internship with Alpha Book Publisher because I wanted to learn about the different aspects of editing and publishing as it varies by the medium in which a piece is produced. For this internship, my expectations are that I will come out of this with a foundation of how editing and publishing processes operate and revive my long-lost love for writing.
I am particularly interested in the editing part of the publishing process. After gaining enough experience, I see myself contributing to the publishing industry by advocating for stories of all genres to be published, not just the ones that are ‘all-the rage’. I want my passions and ambition for this industry to inspire a surge in young writers so they can chase their dreams of publishing their own books and not be scared to make that leap because they fear rejection from editors. I want to give every story the fair chance it deserves.
Long term I aspire to not only climb the ladder in the editing and publishing industry, but hopefully also to expand my bases into jobs like editors for news outlets and/or channels. But at the end of the day, as the sun sets on a career well-made, I want to spend the final years of my career in academia, as a university professor where I can teach other people to chase a career they love and not a career that will only make them money. I want my accomplishments in the publishing industry to show people that two things can be real: you can have financial stability without sacrificing your happiness.
Technically speaking, I completed a journalism internship 4 years ago, and I have spent my entire academic career writing essays and numerous research projects. I would say all of those combined helped me develop a voice in my writing, and a fiery love for writing
and the language for over a decade now. My love for writing has only been bolstered by my studies in university because it is helping me grow professionally and make a career out of something I am very passionate about.
Unfortunately, I have not received any awards or recognitions or any of that sort for my writing. However, I hope that this internship will teach me skills that will notably contribute to my writing and push me one step closer to earning achievements, awards, and/or recognitions for it in the future.
