SAGE Publishing

SAGE Publishing is the world’s fifth largest journal publisher. Its portfolio includes more than 1,000 journals spanning the humanities, social sciences, and science, technology, and medicine.

SAGE is committed to supporting quality research that transforms society and the understanding of individuals, groups, and cultures. SAGE works with publishing partners to ensure that this research is made available to the widest possible audience.

We publish over 1,000 journals

SAGE Publishing publishes over 1,000 journals and 600 new books each year, spanning an array of subject areas. With a focus on the dissemination of usable knowledge, SAGE has a reputation for producing high quality educational resources that prepare citizens, policy makers, educators, and researchers for a changing world.

SAGE's journals, textbooks and reference works span the social sciences, encompassing disciplines such as sociology, economics, anthropology, psychology and political science. We also offer a range of library resources that include archives, data, case studies and video.

We have a longstanding commitment to the social sciences, and our journals and publications play an important role in supporting the development of these disciplines. We publish a broad range of content that emphasizes critical thinking, data analysis and computational tools.

In 1965, Sara Miller McCune founded SAGE Publishing with a vision to support the dissemination of usable knowledge and to educate a global community. Her belief that the best ideas come from a network of contributors has been the driving force behind our mission to make research and learning more accessible worldwide.

Since then, SAGE has grown to become one of the world's leading independent and academic publishers. With an ever-growing range of titles and an expanded portfolio of digital products, we are committed to ensuring that our content is relevant and accessible to an increasingly diverse readership.

Peer review is an essential part of scholarly research and our partnership with Publons offers instant recognition for peer reviews made to SAGE journal articles, in full compliance with journal review policies. Our Reviewer Recognition Service automates the process, providing evidence of all a researcher's review contributions in their Publons profile.

As an additional benefit, SAGE has partnered with Open Access Funder ID to enable funders to be set up in the system as a Centralized Bill Payer through which they can either pre-approve, approve, or decline to pay open access APCs associated with authors at their institution or organization centrally. This enables funders to track and report author open access publishing activity in real time.

SAGE also publishes a range of Open Access options, including 'pure gold' open access journals (for an article publishing charge) and SAGE Choice. SAGE Choice enables authors to publish their articles in SAGE's traditional subscription journals while making their articles open access (for a fee). This continuous publishing feature ensures that your article can be published as soon as it is ready, meaning other researchers can access your work at a much earlier stage.

We offer a range of Open Access options

SAGE Publishing offers a range of Open Access options to help researchers comply with their funding body requirements. The range includes gold open access journals, hybrid open access (SAGE Choice) and green open access archiving.

Gold open access journals offer authors the option to publish their articles under a Creative Commons licence, which means they can make their work available freely to anyone who wants to read it. This is a great way for researchers to share their work with a wider audience.

A growing number of SAGE's journals are now fully open access, meaning they make all their content freely available to readers worldwide under a Creative Commons licence. These journals follow the same rigorous peer review process as their traditional subscription-based counterparts, and are a great choice for researchers who want to publish in high-quality research journals with high production standards.

The SAGE Choice program enables authors to choose to publish their article open access in hybrid SAGE subscription journals, which are available for most SAGE titles, at no extra cost or at a discounted rate. This helps researchers comply with funding bodies’ requirements, and ensures their research is widely available to all interested parties.

Authors can also choose to make their articles open access after publication, using the SAGE Choice 'Share Your Original Submission' option. This allows authors to make their original submission or accepted manuscript open access and share it in any format, including with collaborators.

SAGE also offers a global dissemination service, so that researchers in developing countries can access the same research as those living in wealthier nations. This allows more people to benefit from the scientific findings of research conducted in richer nations, and promotes international collaboration and communication.

To find out more about the range of SAGE's open access options, visit the SAGE Open Access page. There, you can find information on the different options, including the benefits of each and how to submit your research.

SAGE is one of the leading publishers in the world and is committed to increasing its open access offering for researchers across the globe. We aim to make our Open Access offerings easy and straightforward for researchers to use, so that they can be confident that their research will be widely accessible and cited. To get started, start by choosing a journal that you feel most comfortable with. You can then use SAGE Path, a service that helps you find, submit and get published with the right journal for your research.

We support the dissemination of usable knowledge

SAGE Publishing is a leading international provider of high-quality, innovative content, offering over 1000 journals and 900 new books annually. Founded in 1965 by Sara Miller McCune, SAGE is dedicated to supporting the dissemination of usable knowledge and educating a global community.

We publish for academic, scholarly, and professional markets, including business, education, medicine, law, health, engineering, humanities, life sciences, and technology. The company also offers textbooks, reference books, manuscript and book proposal guidelines, author surveys, and library services.

Our mission is to provide a comprehensive range of tools that help researchers, faculty, and students find the information they need, quickly and easily. We believe in the power of digital to improve learning outcomes, and we are committed to delivering innovative and engaging content online and in print that will transform how research is conducted and presented.

At SAGE, we are proud to be at the forefront of the Open Access movement, supporting a transition towards sustainable, equitable and affordable access to scholarly publications. This is why we offer our journals free to read for our users, ensuring that the work of our authors, whether in print or online, is open and accessible to everyone.

In addition, we are enhancing our open access offerings for the social sciences with Advance: a preprints platform that allows academic researchers to share their early versions of their work ahead of formal peer review and publication in a wide range of SAGE journals. The service is designed to allow researchers to disseminate their ideas, receive feedback from colleagues and peers, and build engagement with their research throughout its lifecycle.

We are also working with Figshare to support SAGE journal authors by providing them with a global platform for sharing supplemental materials, bringing these to life and making them more widely accessible before they have been published online. The service enables researchers to share their supplementary material with others, collaborate on projects, and measure its impact through metrics such as views, shares and citations.

In addition, we are partnering with Copia Interactive to make it easier for colleges to provide their students with effective, affordable course materials through a growing number of inclusive access programs. As an integrated digital content provider, Copia offers a powerful suite of learning tools that enable faculty to build individualized, personalized instructional experiences that evolve with their students' needs.

We support libraries

In addition to delivering high-quality content to researchers, SAGE Publishing supports libraries through a variety of services and initiatives. Whether it's providing free access to SAGE Video streaming collections, collaborating with Wikipedia Library to offer full-text access to SAGE journals, or funding public awareness resources about critical thinking, SAGE is dedicated to supporting the work of librarians around the world.

SAGE Publishing is also committed to educating and training librarians and their staff about its products. We have created a number of resource pages to help support librarians who are promoting SAGE Journals, or who are delivering SAGE Journals training sessions at their institutions.

Founded in 1965, SAGE is a global academic publisher that publishes more than 1,000 journals and 600 new books each year. The company is an active participant in the scholarly communications movement, having been a founding member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) and launching SAGE Open, the first broad-spectrum open access journal aimed at the social sciences.

Today, SAGE and the University of California (UC) announced a transformative agreement to expand the reach of UC research across all 10 UC campuses. Running through 2024, the agreement provides UC researchers with funding to make their SAGE research articles open access and free for everyone to read.

This is the first full read-and-publish open access agreement that a U.S. university has entered into with an academic publisher. This deal covers articles by corresponding authors — faculty, lecturers, staff, and students — in the vast majority of SAGE journals (less than 2% are not covered), as well as subscriptions to all SAGE journals.

The agreement supports UC's goal to provide its research and scholarship to the world, while at the same time containing the University's journal-related expenditures. It is the latest in a growing list of UC library-sponsored agreements supporting open access publishing, including agreements with Cambridge University Press and the Public Library of Science, and implementation of UC's open access policy.

SAGE Publishing also has a long history of providing training and support to libraries, particularly in the areas of scholarly communication and library management. We have a range of resources for librarians and library staff, including a comprehensive library training guide that can be used to deliver SAGE Journals training at your institution.
