Top Book Publishers in Abidjan, West Africa

If you’re looking to get published, there are a few key factors that you should consider. One of the most important things is to find a good book publisher, and the best way to do that is to do your research.

Luckily, the publishing world is filled with excellent books that you can find a publisher for. Here are a few of the top book publishers in Abidjan.


Curbside Splendor Press

Curbside Splendor is a small, independent press that publishes fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from "extraordinary voices." They also host an annual novella contest and produce readings, shows, and book fairs. They are based in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood and aim to rewrite the tradition of Midwestern publishing through their many projects.

A few years ago, they opened a retail store in Chicago's South Loop that features books by them and other independent presses. This is an increasing trend among publishers. It allows them to fulfill their mission as the literary heart of a community and bring more customers to their books and programming.

They have published authors like Chelsea Martin, who has received praise from HBO-TV/Girls star Lena Dunham for her novella Mickey. She's also a contributor to Electric Literature and Nylon.

Founded in 2009, the press seeks work that explores hybrid forms and examines contemporary culture. Its publications include a mix of fiction, true-to-life fiction, and nonfiction.

Its list of titles is diverse and includes books about pop music (The Empty Bottle Chicago: 21+ Years of Music / Friendly / Dancing) and horror films (Vile Men). Their publications also often feature artists' books and broadsides.

The company’s founder, Victor David Giron, launched the press in 2009. He was an accountant by trade, but he was inspired to start the press as a way to promote writing he admired.

He hired Naomi Huffman and Catherine Eves as editor-in-chief and managing editor, respectively. They took on all of the accounting and contract work, as well as acquisition, editing, marketing, and distribution. The pair worked in a shared apartment, with Huffman storing inventory in her spare bedroom.

When Huffman left in 2017, Joshua Bohnsack, who was working full-time at Curbside’s indie bookstore, took over the managing editor role. He kept the press afloat for a year. But the workweeks were too long, and morale was dwindling.

Eventually, he ceased paying employees. Authors, contractors, and former staffers contacted Literary Hub to share their stories about payment issues with Giron, who describes himself as “El Jefe” on the company’s website.


Dzanc Books

Dzanc Books is a book publisher with an emphasis on literary fiction and literary nonfiction. Their catalog includes titles by authors like Roy Kesey, Yannick Murphy, Peter Markus, Hesh Kestin, Kyle Minor, Michael Czyzniejewski, and Suzanne Burns.

Dzanc is a small, independent press that has grown impressively over the last dozen years. Its mission is to advance great writing and impact communities through its various community programs. This has included the establishment of The Collagist online journal, the Writers-in-Residence program, and the Disquiet International Literary conference.

Their latest and most impressive venture is their rEprint series, which features e-book reprints of some of the world's best literature. The series includes a handful of books from Dzanc, including The Art of the Knock by Graham Swift, How to Read an Unwritten Language by Richard Ford, and Interior Design by Robert Macfarlane.

Founded in Michigan in 2006 as a literary nonprofit, Dzanc publishes primarily literary fiction. They also offer a few other genres, including poetry and memoirs.

They currently have 100 books in print, and another 300 e-books available through their e-book reissue series. Their main mission is to promote literary readership and provide creative writing instruction in public schools through their Writers-in-Residence and Dzanc workshops.

Dzanc is a member of the Publishers Group West, which distributes their publications to booksellers across the country. They are also a 501(c)3 non-profit, and donate a portion of all profits to charities that support youth in developing countries.

The press also runs the Dzanc Prize for Fiction, which recognizes a daring, original, and innovative novel (over 40,000 words). It comes with a $5,000 advance and publication by Dzanc. The prize is judged by a panel of three respected Dzanc authors: Josip Novakovich, Angel Khoury, and Blair Austin.

The company is known for their sexy staff and top of the line print and digital books, but they also have the capacity to provide a wide range of products and services. NB Publishers

Abidjan, the capital of Cote d’Ivoire, is home to several of the top book publishers in West Africa. One of the country’s largest book publishing companies is NB Publishers, which publishes English and Afrikaans books under seven imprints: Tafelberg, Human & Rousseau, Kwela, Queillerie, Lux Verbi and NAB.

The publishing house primarily concentrates on educational and literary books, and it is a leading publisher of books for children and young adults. It also publishes literary fiction and works of nonfiction from a wide range of genres.

NB Publishers is part of the broader publishing group based in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the holding company for several of the largest publishing houses in South Africa, including the well-known Tafelberg and Human & Rousseau.

Its main objectives are to reduce illiteracy in Ivory Coast and French-speaking West Africa through online education and writing workshops and to promote reading by offering an open study space for reading library, located in Abidjan Yopougon Niangon. It offers a physical and digital library.

Many of the best known African authors have written books that are published by NB Publishers, including Wole Gordimer, Nadine Goridmer and Qarnita Loxton. Their books are popular with both domestic and international readers.

Despite the fact that the majority of newspapers in Abidjan are controlled by the government, there is still a large number of independent publications. These publications generally focus on local news and offer balanced political coverage. Among the most important are the daily Fraternite Matin, Le Jour, and Notre Voie.

Radio stations in Abidjan offer a mix of international and local news programs. The BBC, Radio France Internationale, and Libreville, Gabon-based Africa Number 1 transmit their programs on FM in Abidjan. These broadcasts are heard clearly on multiband sets.

Other major broadcasters include DWV, which is affiliated with France’s National Broadcasting Company, and Radio Nostalgie, an affiliated station that broadcasts 24-hour stereo music and local news. Short-wave radio, which has long been the preferred method for receiving foreign broadcasts in Abidjan, continues to be a viable alternative.

NB Publishers has sold international rights to a number of books, including Jacques Pauw’s political expose The President’s Keepers and Julian Jansen’s The De Zalze Murders, both of which were runaway bestsellers in South Africa and have been translated into English. The latter was picked up by Palama Productions, a Johannesburg-based film and TV studio that intends to turn it into a series.
