Top Book Publishers in Chengdu

As the capital city of the province, Chengdu is home to many top book publishers. It is also known as the City of Bookstores in China.

Before the country's planned economy was implemented, Chinese publishers mainly operated from their home bases with editing, designing, printing, and distribution all done locally. However, with the development of the market economy, some large publishing houses have established branches in markets outside their home base to develop business.


1. People’s Literature Publishing House

PLPH, which is a member of China Publishing Group Corporation, is one of the world’s largest professional publishers of literary works. It is widely recognized by readers for its extensive range of titles and high reputation among authors.

Founded in 1951, PLPH publishes a wide range of literary works from all time classics to contemporary titles written by domestic writers and translated into Chinese. It also has an imprint, Daylight Publishing, specializing in children’s books.

It publishes more than a thousand titles annually and has established good business relationships with many institutions and copyright agencies from overseas. PLPH is known for introducing the work of international literary masters such as Shakespeare, Balzac, Victor Hugo, Tolstoy and Kafka to Chinese readers. Several of its main titles have been translated into English, French, German and Russian languages. In addition, its foreign language magazine Du Shu (Reading) enjoys a large readership.


2. Zhonghua Book Company

The Zhonghua Book Company is a renowned Chinese publishing company that has specialized in ancient books and historical records. The company has published a large number of Chinese classics and has been awarded numerous prizes.

It also publishes textbooks and other educational materials. It has an extensive collection of over 500 titles and is one of the leading book publishers in China.

In recent years, it has also expanded into the lifestyle book market. Its lifestyle books cover fashion, home and cooking, entertainment, travel, self-help, health, sports, hobbies, collecting, and other related subjects.

As part of a government-backed project, it has also established an online portal called pub2web. This website is powered by a new digital publishing platform and management system. 3. China Light Industry Press

China Light Industry Press focuses on science and technology, literature, arts, photography, and Chinese classics. It is one of the leading professional book publishers in the country.

In addition, the company is also a major player in the comic book and graphic novel publishing industry. Its production facilities offer creative, technical, and sales services to Chinese authors and cartoonists.

It publishes over 1,000 titles a year with annual revenues approaching RMB1.2 billion. Among its popular books are textbooks for kindergarten, elementary and high school, vocational schools, special education, and ELHI teachers’ training materials. It also owns a printing factory and an import and export corporation.


4. Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House

Besides publishing traditional textbooks, these publishers also provide technical support for local research institutes. Some of these companies have established branches in Chengdu and other cities across the country.

In recent years, the market for educational publishing has grown rapidly. There are more than 16 million college students in the Chinese mainland, as well as 4.5 million students at community colleges and vocational schools.

In addition to traditional textbooks, the educational book market includes a variety of self-guided tour books, travel guides with special themes, and picture travel guides. These titles are all steady sellers and have a high demand.


5. Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers

Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers focuses on books on science, technology and medicine. They publish a wide variety of titles in these fields, such as biology, medicine, geology, chemistry, physics, astronomy and mathematics.

They also have a strong presence in the field of education and university publishing, producing teaching guides and supplementary materials. This is one of the fastest growing sectors in China’s book industry, with sales estimated at RMB2.5 billion to RMB3.5 billion per year.

6. Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press

One of the city’s oldest book publishers, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) publishes books in both Chinese and English. It is dedicated to publishing foreign language textbooks, monographs, dictionaries, reference books, readers, and scholarly journals in both print and digital media.

The press is an affiliate of Beijing Foreign Studies University, and was founded in 1979. It has published more than 6000 titles in over 30 languages.

Dedicated to academic research and discipline development, the press has allocated millions of yuan each year to finance research. 10. China Medical Publishing House

The China Medical Publishing House (PMPH) is the largest medical publisher in China. It publishes clinical references, textbooks and online material for physicians, dentists, medical students and health science practitioners around the world.

Founded in 1953, PMPH has become one of the top professional publishers in China, and it is a world-renowned collaborating center for WHO publications. Its publications include clinical medicine, illustrated plates, medical textbooks and other materials.

Since 2008, PMPH has set up an American company, dubbed PMPH USA, Ltd., to further extend its global reach. It acquires world-class medical books and authors in oncology, surgery, neurology, pediatrics, oral surgery and dentistry, and has established a leading role in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) book publication throughout Asia.
