There are 219 national publishers in the Chinese mainland, which is about 40% of the country’s total number of publishing companies. Beijing and Shanghai account for the majority of the publishing houses in China, with the rest spread out throughout the other provinces.
The government divides books into 22 categories, which include social sciences, science and technology, literature and art, children’s books, Chinese classics, education, academic, and reference and encyclopedia.
People’s Literature Publishing House
People’s Literature Publishing House is the country’s largest and most prestigious literary publisher. It has the most extensive back catalog in China and produces 500 titles each year. It also publishes a number of influential literary periodicals including Modern Times and Facts on File for Contemporary Literature.
It also publishes a number of important books on foreign literature such as The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Honore De Balzac and Henrik Johan Ibsen. It has also translated many classic novels and works of fiction into Chinese.
The company is an active part of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and has been a strong supporter of regime-supported art and literature in China since its establishment in 1952. It is headquartered in Shanghai and has more than 40 branches nationwide.
There are 50 publishers specializing in literature and art. The most well-known include the People’s Literature Publishing House, Writers Publishing House, Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House, China Youth Press, Huacheng Press, Yangtze River Literature and Art Publishing House, and Hebei Educational Press.
Besides literature and art, there are also 60 publishers specializing in social science books. The most well-known are the SDX Joint Publishing Co., Ltd., China Social Science Publishing House, People’s Literature Publishing House, Peking University Press, Shanghai People’s Publishing House, Academia Press, and Central Party Literature Publishing House.
Another important book publisher is Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House. It publishes thousands of titles each year with annual gross sales totaling more than RMB200 million. It has a strong focus on farmers through titles on the popular sciences and established book series in pragmatic areas such as health, horticulture, animal husbandry, cooking, sewing, and knitting.

It compiles and publishes many textbook series aimed at primary, middle and high schools, as well as a number of books focusing on specialized topics in the fields of history, literature and anthropology.
