Top Book Publishers in Moscow

There are a number of top book publishers in Moscow. Some are venerable urban bookstore properties, while others are entirely new.

The publishing industry in Russia has undergone major transformations in the past two decades. It now includes both new and old players, as well as many new digital services.

Voyengiz

Voyengiz, a textbook publishing house run by the Propaganda Department of the Red Army, has a renowned reputation for producing some of the most interesting war literature in Russia. General Alexander Shcherbakov, alternate member of the Polit-Bureau and one-time general secretary of the Writers' Union, keeps an eagle eye on Russian literature and often gets in touch with authors to read their works and encourage them.

He is the man who arranged for a new edition of Bagration, by Sergei Golubov, a novel that has helped educate many of the men of the Red Army, and for the wartime best-seller Road to Calvary, by Alexey Tolstoy. He has also issued the best-selling volume of Stalin's speeches, On the Creed Patriotic War of the Soviet Union, 51/2 million copies which have sold in the days following publication.

In addition to Voyengiz, there are several other top book publishers in Moscow. Among them are Goslitizdat, which is the leading literature house; Detgiz, the leading publisher of books for children; and a number of smaller publishing houses.

The largest of these is Ogiz, a word formed from the initials for "Obyedineniye Gosudarstvenikh Izdatelstv," or Association of State Publishing Houses, which has seven branches in Moscow and Leningrad and smaller ones in sixteen Soviet Republics. It brings out a wide range of books and magazines on every subject from politics to agriculture, and it controls factories that produce paper and printing equipment.

Another large publishing house is the Institute of Encyclopedias and Reference Books. This is the publisher of The Great Soviet Atlas, a four-volume work the size of the Times gazetteer, which will be a national treasure.

This same house has produced a number of other notable works such as the Small Soviet Encyclopedia, ten volumes; and the Russian-English dictionary. The house has also launched a series of reference libraries which cover all the fields from natural science to political history.

Voyengiz is also the leading publisher of military literature in Russia, bringing out books to help the Red Army train its men as soldiers and citizens. In addition to the regular textbooks, Voyengiz issues books containing information on army regulations and foreign countries and military theory (one of its best-selling translations is Clausewitz's The Art of War).

Academia Publishers

ARPHA is a publisher of academic books and journals, the largest in Russia. Its publications are primarily in Russian and English, with some of them in other languages. Its yearly output is about 150 issues of scholarly journals in the fields of science, humanities and education.

ARPHA has recently transferred the BRICS Journal of Economics, a new open access, peer-reviewed scientific outlet launched by Moscow State University, with the support of Pensoft. The BRICS Journal of Economics is a relatively young journal that aims to provide an accessible, non-commercial platform for researchers interested in the economic issues of BRICS countries (Russia, Brazil, India and China) as well as the prospects emerging from these constantly growing economies.

Many of the authors who publish in the BRICS Journal of Economics, and their research, are not well-known to the international academic community. In this context, a lot of work is done behind the scenes, to get the publications published quickly. In some cases, this is a toll road on the mental health of academics, who are forced to write at a high level and with a very little understanding of what their work is about.

Some of these authors pay a lot of money to have their articles published, and this is another important problem that needs to be tackled. This is in addition to the neoliberalisation of academic publishing and research, which leads to overproduction of low-quality, cliche writing.

This kind of writing is not only damaging to the author’s reputation, but it also undermines the professional standing of the author, and can chip away at their mental health. This is especially true when the publication is in a language that is not their mother tongue, which is often the case for Russian authors.

The challenge for academics and researchers is to find alternative routes to knowledge creation that are more transparent, less costly and involve a different kind of knowledge production. In this way, they can help shift the publishing system towards a more open and inclusive one.

A lot of collectives that are embedded into the academia and knowledge creation contexts are experimenting with different forms of knowledge creation, going beyond textual modes. They are trying to create a space for activism and community voices in order to challenge the dominant modes of knowledge and power. This can be challenging, but it is also a crucial self-reflection for those involved.

Gospolitizdat

The top book publisher in Moscow is Gospolitizdat, whose output has increased by a significant amount in the last three years and will continue to expand in the coming years. Its output includes fiction, nonfiction, children's books, and reference materials.

Its publishing list is a veritable who's who of the world's best-known writers, from Stephen King to John Grisham, and it works hard to find homegrown talent too. The list includes Boris Akunin, Pavel Basinsky, Edward Radzinsky, Dmitry Glukhovsky, and Polina Dashkova.

This large company aims to cover every book segment, and is divided into 40 teams. It publishes social sciences and humanities, business books, and copublishes with international organizations such as the UN, WHO, IMF, World Bank, and OECD.

In addition to its main catalogue, AST also publishes magazines and has an extensive range of POD books. Its e-books are available on Google Play and Apple iTunes, and it is preparing to launch an app for the Amazon Kindle reader.

Founded in 1990 and headed by Oleg Novikov, this book publisher has a strong reputation in the publishing industry and is regarded as one of Russia's most progressive. Novikov has been a driving force behind several initiatives to promote reading in Russia and is among those who have taken the lead in trying to reverse a decline in the number of readers.

Its main output is fiction, but it also publishes nonfiction and children's titles. In 2010 it sold more than 150,000,000 copies and has a growing list of e-books.

As a major Russian translation house, Goslitizdat specializes in foreign literature and translations into Russian. Its list is a treasure trove of classic and contemporary Russian literature in translation.

There are few other publishers in the country that have such a deep catalog of Russian-language translations. Its translations include works by the likes of John Grisham, Stephenie Meyer, Sidney Sheldon, and Nicholas Sparks.

The largest of the specialized publishing houses, Gosizdat is a huge operation. Its divisions are pedagogical (Uchpedgiz), socioeconomic (Sotsekgiz), mass political (Masspartgiz), technical (Gostekhizdat), agricultural (Sel'khozgiz), juridical (Iurizdat), medical (Medizdat), and literature (GIKHL).

Aside from its main activity, Gosizdat produces dictionaries and encyclopedias, a category that has become increasingly important in recent years as the Soviet Union has moved toward the global market. Its most famous work is The Great Soviet Atlas, a four-volume encyclopedia whose size is comparable to the Times gazetteer.

Malysh

Malysh is a top book publisher in Moscow that publishes Russian books and also publishes foreign titles. The company publishes books across a variety of genres, including fiction and nonfiction. The company has an impressive list of authors, and is one of the largest book publishers in Russia.

In the Soviet Union, Malysh began in 1933 as Detskaya Literatura (Children's Literature). It eventually merged with Detskii Mir (Children's World) and was renamed Malysh in 1964.

Its books were aimed at children between the ages of two and seventeen. During this time the company produced some of the best Soviet writers and illustrators, and was highly regarded by its customers.

The company's list of books includes literature of the Soviet era and contemporary novels. It also publishes dictionaries and textbooks.

Malysh's books are primarily used in the Russian classroom, and they are widely read by schoolchildren. The company also distributes its publications in other countries, such as Austria and Canada.

As a top book publisher in Moscow, Malysh is committed to promoting reading among young readers and works hard to ensure that all books are free of errors. It also participates in major international book fairs and festivals to increase exposure for its books and authors.

In addition to publishing books, the company also has a successful e-book platform that offers readers a wide range of titles. It has a catalog of more than 7,000 titles and is the leader in the e-book market in Russia.

The company is also committed to bringing the world's finest writers and books to the Russian public, and has been successful at doing so. Their list of authors includes Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Stephen King, Paulo Coelho, Dan Brown, and more.

It also has a strong publishing program for children, and publishes books that cover a wide range of subjects. Its list of books for children includes both fiction and nonfiction.

The company has a number of imprints that focus on different topics and genres, and it is one of the biggest Russian publishers. It also has a strong editorial team and publishes more than 40 million copies of books per year.
