Top Book Publishers in Shenyang

China’s book market is second in size only to the United States. Its state-controlled publishing houses dominate the industry.

Some of them go to indie book fairs to find new writers and illustrators, but such co-operation involves added scrutiny from censors. For these publishers, doing business outside their home base has become a necessity to meet demand.

1. China Children’s Press & Publication Group

China Children’s Press & Publication Group (CCPPG) is one of China’s top book publishers. Its mission is to nurture homegrown talent, and it has a robust catalogue of original works that are sure to impress readers of all ages.

CCPPG’s Happy Reading platform is the new kid on the block, and it has a lot to offer, from digital versions of CCPPG newspapers and magazines, to animated stories, to interactive picture books. Sun Zhu, the President of CCPPG, says that this is the company’s most ambitious project since the launch of its online library, which provides a plethora of resources for parents and kids alike.

According to CCPPG, the most impressive part of its new platform is that it allows users to create their own customized libraries with their favourite titles, and it also makes it easier to find what they’re looking for through a streamlined user interface.

The company’s main goal is to become the leading player in the Chinese book market, which has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past decade. To this end, CCPPG is focusing on technical and editorial innovation, as well as capital operation and human resources development.

The CCPPG octavo - the company’s flagship publication - is the most successful of all its products and has sold over 140 million copies in 2013. Its other publications, including Infant Pictorial and Pre-School Pictorial targeting infants and toddlers, have enjoyed the same success, and the company’s most popular series is its Red Kangaroo series, which has amassed an audience of more than two million readers. Despite the fact that it’s the largest book publishing group in China, CCPPG still has plenty of room for improvement.

2. China Light Industry Press

Founded in 2002, China Light Industry Press is one of the largest book publishers in Shenyang. It publishes a wide variety of books in several categories including science, literature, and art.

The company also publishes a number of foreign language books for Chinese students and teachers. They publish textbooks and other learning materials in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Korean.

It has a vast portfolio of titles in both fiction and non-fiction and is renowned for its quality. It has published such popular books as Notes from Mountains, The Horse Whisperer (translation), and Sophie’s World.

These titles have made it to the bestseller lists and continue to sell well. It has also licensed many medical titles from overseas and continues to expand its medical library.

Other major areas of professional publishing include mechanical engineering, automobile engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, instrument making, automation, and computer technology. It is the leader in this field with an output of 1,000 titles each year.

Another popular category is travel. It has a large selection of self-guided tour books, travel guides with special themes, and picture travel guides. These titles have become steady sellers and are expected to grow in popularity over the next few years.

There are a number of other reputable book publishers in Shenyang as well. The most prestigious is People’s Literature Publishing House with its back catalog of over 500 titles.

It has also compiled and published the complete works of some of the best literary writers from both China and abroad. Some of its most notable titles include The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, The Complete Works of Honore De Balzac, The Complete Works of Henrik Johan Ibsen, and The Complete Works of Miguel de Cervantes.

3. Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House

Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House is a major book publisher affiliated with the General Logistics Department of the People's Liberation Army and is primarily a mass market publisher. It has a diverse catalog with thousands of titles and annual gross sales surpassing RMB200 million.

Aside from books for military and civic service personnel, Jindun also publishes a wide variety of practical books that are popular among rural residents. These include titles on agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, cooking, sewing, and knitting.

Another major sector of the Chinese book market is the education industry. Educational books are primarily textbooks for kindergarten, elementary, and high schools as well as study guides and teaching materials. They make up about 6-8% of the retail book market.

In the past decade, English learning books have emerged as a growing part of the educational book market. Basic English, dictionaries and test guides are the three most important components of this area.

Moreover, lifestyle, health, travel and other related books have been steadily increasing in popularity. Many of these books have become bestsellers.

As a result, there are several publishers specializing in these fields. Among them, People's Literature Publishing House and Jilin Fine Arts Publishing House are the leaders in this field.

In addition, Shanghai Translation Publishing House and Yilin Press both have had excellent performances in this area in recent years. They have published several dozen multi-volume complete and selected works of foreign literary masters. These include William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Somerset Maugham, Erich Maria Remarque, and Heinrich Boll. They have also introduced modern fiction and poetry to the Chinese reader. The success of these books has made the two companies become important players in the world of international literature.

4. Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers

In the last five to ten years, China has seen a rapid growth of book publishing. Several publishing groups emerged to take advantage of this market opportunity. They include the Shanghai Century Publishing Group, Guangdong Publishing Group, Beijing Publishing Group, China Sciences Publishing Group, Shandong General Publishing House and Liaoning Publishing Group.

In 2002, about 21,000 literature and art titles were published in the Chinese mainland. Those titles represented 12% of the country’s total book output. Among the top sellers in this category are fiction, poetry and biography titles.

For science books, Hunan Science & Technology Press, Kaiming (Enlightenment) Publishing House and World Publishing Corporation are leading the industry in translations of popular science works. The latter recently translated and published the works of Stephen W. Hawking, which boosted sales of illustrated editions of A Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell.

Education and language reference books have also been strong sellers. Foreign language teaching and research books, English as a second language (ELHI) textbooks, and Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) textbooks are all popular. Many other publishers such as Hubei Education Press, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press and Jiangsu Education Publishing House have performed well in this area.

Another important market is business and law books. As China develops a legal system, an interest in law books has grown steadily each year. Various companies hold annual business and law book fairs to promote their books.

In addition, the Chinese mainland’s comic book and graphic novel market is developing rapidly. Several prominent publishers, including the People’s Fine Arts Publishing House and Hebei Fine Arts Publishing House, have invested in production facilities to develop the market for comics and graphic novels. They are now the leading publishers in this field and also supply creative, technical and sales services for domestic cartoonists and comic artists.

5. China Children’s Press & Publication Group

The China Children’s Press & Publication Group is the country’s largest publishing house devoted to children. It publishes a broad range of books, including fiction and non-fiction, comics, history titles for young readers, and classical stories.

CCPPG is committed to nurturing homegrown talent and publishing outstanding original works. In 2019, the company plans to increase its efforts in these areas, according to Sun Zhu, the company’s president.

In the last decade, children’s book sales have grown rapidly in the Chinese mainland. In 2002, they amounted to RMB1.5 billion, or 3.3% of the national retail market.

This growth rate is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Currently, more than 570 publishing houses in China have specialized departments for children’s books.

A number of them have branches in other cities or markets beyond their headquarters. These publishers have better access to customers and can more efficiently compete with others in their sector. Beijing and Shanghai are the main choices for opening up branches as they have prominent positions in culture, finance, and economic strength.

Among these publishers are China Children’s Publishing House, Jiangsu Juvenile and Children’s Publishing House, Sichuan Children’s Publishing House, and Tomorrow Publishing House. These five have a back catalog of more than 1,000 titles and annual gross sales surpassing RMB200 million.

The company also publishes ELHI teachers’ training materials and educational textbooks, as well as other teaching materials catering to local needs. These publications have achieved great success in promoting the development of education.

CCPPG has recently joined the ASEAN-China Children’s Book Cooperation Project, which seeks to strengthen cooperation between AMS and China in the field of children’s publishing. It is hoped that high-quality children’s books will be used as a bridge to promote cultural exchanges between the youths of the two countries.
