With a population of over 126 million people, Tokyo is home to one of the world's most vibrant literary cities. Whether you're interested in manga, mass market paperbacks, or a history of Japanese art and culture, you'll find it all here.
The city also has some of Japan's top book publishers. These companies are known for their high-quality books on everything from art, fashion, and design to history, cooking, and the performing arts.

Kinokuniya
Kinokuniya is a Japanese book publisher and retailer that has been around since 1927. They are the largest book publisher in Japan and have a number of stores in the United States.
They are a great place to find manga and anime as well as a lot of different books from other countries. They also have a stationery subscription box called Maido in a Box which is full of fun Japanese stationery items.
The store also has a small section dedicated to art and photography and a separate area for toys, stationery and gifts. They also have a cafe on the first floor that sells snacks and bubble tea. It’s the perfect place for a quick snack or a lunch break in Tokyo.
Their headquarters is located in Shinjuku, and they have 56 stores in the country as well as 7 regional webstores that serve Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia.
It has been reported that they are a popular place to shop for those who enjoy anime and manga, with more than 60 different titles on offer at any one time. They also have a selection of books for adults and children alike.
They have a large selection of books on Japanese culture, history, food, language and travel. It’s also a good place to find new authors and to get a feel for the Japanese lifestyle.
The company also has stores in other cities, including San Francisco and Los Angeles as well as other locations throughout the world. The chain also has a number of theatres and art galleries incorporated into some of their stores, as they believe that bookstores should not only be retail outlets but are centers for the promotion of culture.
Despite their reputation as a store primarily devoted to Japanese books, they have recently started selling more English-language titles and are becoming more popular with American tourists. They also sell a range of Japanese pens, stationery and gifts.
In the US, they have a branch in Rockefeller Center on Sixth Avenue in New York City. It covers an entire block and is probably the best known Kinokuniya location in the U.S.
Sanseido
Sanseido is a large Japanese book publisher that produces numerous textbooks and dictionaries. They also offer a variety of other services, including online shopping and E-books. Their products include books, magazines, office equipment, stationery, and DVDs.
The company also has a wide array of books on Japanese linguistics, making them a top choice for students looking to expand their knowledge about the language. They have an excellent collection of books on pidgin and regional dialects, as well as books on polite speech.
One of their newest books, The Complete Guide to Japanese Linguistics: From Pidion to Phrasebook, is an incredibly informative resource that compiles every aspect of the language into one comprehensive book. It’s perfect for students who want to get an in-depth understanding of the language and how it works, and it will help you break away from your stereotypical perception of the Japanese language.
Another excellent resource is the Sanseido Super Daijirin / Honorific Dictionary for ATOK, which compiles an entire lexicon of technical and proper nouns into a single easy-to-use dictionary that can be linked to your ATOK account. The dictionary features a huge range of new words, as well as explanations of proper nouns and technical terms.
It is also available in a mobile app version that will display membership information for Club Sanseido, the members service of the company’s stores. The app is free to download and is compatible with most phones.
In Tokyo, there are many big names in Japanese book publishing, but the one that stands out the most is the upcoming closure of Sanseido’s Jinbocho store. The unassuming neighborhood is known for its large collection of used bookstores and publishers, and losing one of the city’s most iconic and long-standing businesses will be a major blow to the community.
Thankfully, a new building for Sanseido will be built in 2025 to replace the current location, so there is still hope for fans of the company. In the meantime, though, there are several things that can be done to keep the company’s legacy alive.
First of all, if you’re planning on visiting Tokyo any time soon, it’s a good idea to start your list of places to visit by checking out the famous Sanseido store in Jinbocho. It’s a great place to pick up Japanese books and publications, and it has a bonus card program that will send you stamps every $10 you spend. It’s worth a visit just to check it out, though it is a bit pricey compared to other Japanese bookstores in the area.
Book and Sons
Book and Sons is a Tokyo-based bookstore that specializes in typography, design and photography. It’s a popular destination for college students, established magazines and graphic designers, locals and visitors to Tokyo. Osamu Kawata is the owner of the shop, and he explains that he wished to find a way to pass on his love of reading printed books.
While Kawata doesn’t work at the shop most of the time, his friendly and knowledgeable staff are always ready to assist customers. They can help you find books that are new and rare, or point you in the direction of a bookstore nearby with an extensive inventory of used books for sale.
The store is located in the quiet, residential area of Gakugei Daigaku, about eight minutes from Shibuya on the Tokyu Toyoko line. The neighborhood is home to a number of interesting shops, including barbecue specialist Hatos Bar and Onibus Coffee, as well as a few restaurants.
Those who have been to Tokyo have no doubt seen the vast amount of character stores throughout the city. While most of them are based on Japanese anime and manga, there is a growing trend among Japanese tourists to seek out stores that focus on international franchises such as Harry Potter and Star Wars.
These stores are often referred to as “character cafes” or “character hotels,” and they are ideal places for visitors who want to immerse themselves in the culture while consuming a good book. But be warned: Some of these stores do not take reservations, so if you want to avoid a long wait, try to make your reservation early.
Another place to check out when you’re in the area is Isseido Booksellers, a third generation bookseller that was one of the first to rebuild after the great Tokyo earthquake of 1923. The shop sells a wide variety of rare books and ancient materials, including scrolls, maps and manuscripts.
This is a great choice for visitors who are interested in Japan’s culture and history. The shop also offers a range of scholarly editions, as well as some rare books on Western literature.
Iwanami Shoten
Iwanami Shoten is a Japanese publisher of high-quality books, journals, and dictionaries. Founded in 1913, it is one of the oldest publishing houses in Japan and is known for its high-end paperbacks and Kojien, a comprehensive one-volume dictionary which has long been considered the standard in the language.
The company has been around for over a century and has published well over 30,000 titles. Their most popular products include scholarly books, editions of classical Japanese literature, and dictionaries.
They are also renowned for their charitable donations, including an annual donation of 600 volumes of top-notch books to Peking University Library. The donations are worth over RMB 10 million, a sizable sum in today's Chinese market.
Their flagship publication is Monumenta Nipponica, which celebrates its centennial in 2013. The journal is a peer-reviewed international forum for Asian studies and features original research on premodern and modern history, art, literature, religion, and thought as well as translations of important Japanese sources and authoritative reviews of recent books on the topic.
Another notable Iwanami product is the company's latest edition of Kojien, which has a lot of buzz in the lexicon department as the newest and best Japanese-language dictionary to ever grace a bookstore shelf. It also boasts the world's largest online dictionary database, which covers over a billion words.
Iwanami's most illustrious publishing feat is undoubtedly its "Kojien" (the world's biggest dictionary), a massive a-z list of over 38,000 entries which took more than 800 authors over ten years to compile and edit. This is the company's largest single publication to date, and it is an accomplishment which is reflected in its enviable record of success over the years.
