Top Book Publishers in Wuhan

During the rapid growth of Chinese book publishing over the past five to ten years, a group of prominent publishers emerged from the various sectors.

In the business area, accounting, taxation, finance, medical insurance, and management books have strong sales. Standardized test guides are also in demand.

The People’s Literature Publishing House

The People’s Literature Publishing House is one of the largest and most prestigious professional publishers specializing in literature. It is a member of the China Publishing Group Corporation and is widely respected among readers. It publishes a vast number of quality literary works, from all time classics to the latest titles, by domestic writers and translated from other languages.

The company is also a major publisher of social science books. It publishes 500 titles per year, focusing on translations of the finest contemporary Western works in philosophy and the humanities. It also produces a wide range of titles in the social sciences, including subjects for laymen and reference books.

It also has four popular magazines — Du Shu (Reading), SDX Weekly, Music Lovers and Chinese Learner’s Companion — which are widely read by intellectuals. The company is a leader in its category and has annual gross sales of RMB80 million.

While the Chinese book industry has long been considered a small and uncompetitive market, the recent explosion of interest in comic books and graphic novels is transforming it into a vibrant and diverse publishing sector. Some of the leading comic publishers in China include Hebei Fine Arts, China Picture-Story Book Publishing House and Shanghai People’s Fine Arts Publishing House.

In addition, there are more than 1,000 university presses in China and they operate as profit centers just like commercial publishers. The largest number of them is found in Beijing and Shanghai, which account for 40% and 30% of the total national publisher market, respectively.

The People’s Posts and Telecommunications Publishing House

The People’s Posts and Telecommunications Publishing House (PPT) is a state-owned publishing group with an annual output of more than 6,000 printed books, electronic publications, and audio and video products. It also owns 46 periodicals and 3 newspapers and distributes its wares to more than 150 countries and regions.

The PPT is a key player in the national book industry, producing a wide array of quality titles and generating a healthy revenue stream. Its publications are distributed through an extensive network of distribution centers, distributors and retail outlets across the country.

Its most notable achievement is the creation of the world’s largest and fastest-growing digital publication platform in China. The platform is designed to deliver quality content via a variety of channels including websites, social media and mobile applications.

As a matter of fact, the platform has garnered many awards and accolades, including the coveted title of China’s leading publisher.

The PPT has a number of impressive achievements, but the most important one is its mission to present China to the world through quality books and other multimedia products. The company has a unique multi-lingual publishing network, producing a large amount of high-quality information in a variety of languages, which it distributes to over 150 countries and regions around the world. The company also has a state-of-the-art publishing infrastructure and a solid track record of product development and innovation.

The Shanghai Literature & Art Publishing House

The Shanghai Literature & Art Publishing House (Shanghai Century Group) is one of the largest translation publishers in China. It publishes up to 500 titles each year, and its back catalog is among the largest in the world. It has translated works by such well-known authors as Henrik Johan Ibsen, William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.

Besides literature, Chinese book publishers also specialize in arts and photography, which have developed into an important part of the national culture. There are about 30 major art publishers in China, specializing in paintings, sculpture, calligraphy and fine art publishing.

Some of the most famous arts and photography publishers include People’s Fine Arts Publishing House, Jiangsu Fine Arts Publishing House, Zhejiang Photography Press, Hebei Education Press, Guangdong Fine Arts & Photography Press, and Liaoning Photography & Art Press.

In recent years, the Chinese market has witnessed a surge in interest in science books. Publishers such as the World Publishing Corporation, Zhejiang Science & Technology Press, Hunan Science & Technology Press and Kaiming (Enlightenment) Publishing House have seized the opportunity and have translated popular science books into Chinese such as A Brief History of Time by Stephen W. Hawking and The Universe in a Nutshell by Neil deGrasse Tyson, which sold 150,000 copies in China.

The China Children’s Press & Publication Group, affiliated with the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, is a leading publisher of children’s books in the country. It has an extensive back catalog and publishes thousands of titles each year with gross sales surpassing RMB400 million.

The China Light Industry Press

The China Light Industry Press is the official book publishing entity for China’s light industries. Its functions include analyzing and reporting the status of light industry enterprises, providing guidance and information for establishing and developing strategic economic zones, and promoting the development of light industry.

The CNLIC also works to build the light industry into a diversified and high-quality industry, with a strong scientific and technological capacity, an improved industrial chain, and an innovative capability. To improve these conditions, the CNLIC and relevant departments have implemented several important policies.

One of these is the promotion of diversification in book distribution. This encourages private and foreign capital to enter the publishing industry through equity joint ventures or private companies. Similarly, the State Administration of Press and Publication also promotes the introduction of new technology.

Despite these efforts, the book publishing industry has yet to achieve economies of scale, due in part to low concentration rates among large and medium-sized presses. It is therefore necessary to encourage group formation in the industry to boost competition and improve industrial structure.

For example, the Shanghai Century Publishing Group owns 13 publishing houses and 45 newspapers. Its products include education, arts and photography, and fine art publications. Moreover, the company has a number of foreign trade subsidiaries that sell its publications to countries around the world.

The Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House

The Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House is a powerful publishing house that has carved a niche for itself by serving readers of the countryside and small towns. It has focused on rural audiences and published a wide variety of titles on practical topics such as health, agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, cooking, sewing and knitting.

Its books have sold well and its sales figures for the last five years are among the highest in the industry. Some of its bestsellers include a series of titles on how to rear pigs that had a total print run of seven million copies.

This company also specializes in a range of business books that cater to the needs of enterprises and individuals alike. Besides general interest titles, it publishes management and accounting books, economics and finance titles, and business strategy guides.

Other important publishers in the business book market are China Light Industry Press, Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers, Liaoning Science and Technology Press, Jiangsu Science and Technology Publishing House, Guangdong Travel & Tourism Press, People’s Medical Publishing House, and People’s Sports Publishing House.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a premier think-tank that is headquartered in Beijing, has five publishing houses. The most influential of these is the China Social Sciences Publishing House. It has a reputation for the high quality of its research and publications. Its publications are based on priority projects and written by first-rate scholars.

The Writers’ Publishing House

The Writers’ Publishing House is one of China’s leading literary publishing houses. Its functions include publishing literature, editing literature and art, and promoting literature. Its goals are to promote literary creation, strengthen the national cultural industry, and develop the Chinese language. It has also devoted to cultivating literature workers.

The publishing house has a number of literary magazines and journals. Its publications are widely regarded as excellent in quality and content. They provide a platform for the exchange of views on literary topics and literary issues.

In 2022, the publishing house will hold a creative writing contest about China’s mountain villages. Its objectives are to select a group of writers who are talented and can convey the new era of rural development in China. They will look for original full-length novels, which present the great changes in agriculture and Chinese agricultural management.

Wuhan, an inland city of more than 8 million people, is a gateway to the interior. It is at the confluence of two of the country’s most important rivers. It is home to a large industrial and economic center.

In January, when a coronavirus outbreak first swept Wuhan, acclaimed writer Fang Fang began publishing an online diary of her experience. She shared her nightly postings with millions of Chinese readers, giving them a rare look into the lives of their neighbors and friends during the crisis. She triggered polarized opinion in China, with some calling her a truth-teller and others viewing her as a traitor and liar. Her diaries are now being published in the United States and have been praised as a powerful, first-person account of the COVID-19 outbreak.
