NDSU Extension is offering summer internships for high school and college students in agriculture, natural resources, 4-H youth development/education and family and community wellness.

1. Cass County Emergency Management System

The Cass County Emergency Management System works to prepare for and respond to disasters. These can include natural and man-made hazards, such as tornadoes, blizzards, acts of terrorism and pandemic influenza.

EMA staff work daily to plan, train and practice responding to emergencies. They also assist other first responders by providing training and assisting in the preparation of their own plans.

Lawrence County EMA Director Valerie Luchauer is a master of exercise, putting on a Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) exercise this past year that dealt with a hazmat situation and a crop duster.

She and her team work closely with their advisory board, Indiana University, hospitals and utilities to stay aware of the community’s needs and prepared for any kind of incident. This helped them get help quickly when a house exploded in Evansville last month.

2. Cass County Economic Development

Cass County Economic Development is a membership based organization made up of businesses and governmental partners who believe that Cass County needs more jobs and a broader tax base. Since 1997, the EDC has provided confidential services to residents and business owners.

Workforce development, attraction and retention of existing business and industry to improve the local economy. This includes community development and workforce education to help address current and future employment needs.

State law allows cities and counties to create workforce development authorities that levy mills on property taxes. The authority can also be made up of appointed members from throughout the county.

Commissioner Chad Peterson has asked Wilson to study the possibility of creating such a group that could also be called a Workforce Advisory Board. He said he recognizes that the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce are working on workforce plans, but he believes such an authority could add more structure to local economic development.
