DC Comics, a major publisher of American comic books and graphic novels, has explored the theme of genetic engineering in several of its science fiction storylines. One notable example is the series "Superman: Red Son," which explores an alternate reality in which Superman's spaceship landed in Soviet Russia instead of the United States. In this reality, the Soviet government utilizes Superman's abilities and genetic makeup to create a superpowered communist society. Another example is the series "Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia," in which the villainous character Doctor Cyber genetically enhances a group of women to create an army of superpowered soldiers. The series "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" also features genetic engineering, in which the villainous character The Joker is revealed to have been genetically altered by a criminal organization, leading to his insanity. In general, these storylines use the theme of genetic engineering to explore ideas about power, responsibility, and the consequences of playing with the fundamental building blocks of life.
