While tianxia has become the focus of many contemporary debates, it is also important to note that some critics believe that it has led to a number of problems in Chinese history. They point out that the tianxia idea has nourished notions of “the difference between Chinese and barbarians” as well as ideas of Sino-centrism, both of which left China closed in on itself and uninterested in the larger world. They suggest that if China is to succeed, it will need to develop more open-minded policies towards its neighbors.
Chongqing Xinhua Shudian
Xinhua Shudian is the largest and only country-wide bookstore chain in China. It has about 14,000 stores nationwide and overseas subsidiaries in New York City, San Diego, London, Manila and Japan. Its flagship store is in the Xicheng District of Beijing.
Founded in 1937 as Guanghua Bookstore, it changed its name to Xinhua Bookstore in 1942. It is now headquartered in Chongqing and is one of the top book publishers in China. It publishes books in Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean, as well as other languages. It also sells CDs and DVDs for learning foreign languages.
In the 1940s, Xinhua was involved in the production of propaganda films for the Chinese Nationalist Army. The company was a major partner in the war against Japan. During this time, it sent its films to Zhonghua Films for distribution in Japanese-occupied areas of China.
The first film Xinhua distributed to Zhonghua was Mulan Joins the Army. The film was a classic of World War II and was popular among the military. It was filmed at an army camp near Nanjing and was released in Japan in 1941.
As a result of the Japanese occupation, many people were forced to work in the armed forces. They were also faced with a shortage of supplies. The Communist Party, however, reacted positively to the situation. Its leaders encouraged the use of labor to increase the economy.
It also supported the cooperation between the Communist Party and the Nationalist Party, especially during the war. This relationship became a symbol of the “united front” against Japan. It was also an important factor in the development of leftist literature in Nationalist-held Chongqing.
A study of the press in wartime Chongqing shows that there was a close cooperation between the Communist and Nationalist presses. The Communist press, for example, ceased to print independently and centralized its operation. Likewise, the Nationalist press, which was not independent, also stopped publishing independently and merged to form one united press.
The most prominent figure in the Chongqing Communist Party was Guo Moruo Guo Mo Ruo, who dominated the Communist Party's official newspaper, Xinhua ribao. His main responsibility was to supervise the publication of literature that supported the Communist Party's policy and the war against Japan. He was considered the “protege of the Communist Party.” In this respect, he and his colleagues at Wenxie (the official party magazine) had great influence.
Chongqing Zhongshuge Bookstore

Located on the third and fourth floor of Zodi Plaza in Yangjiaping, the bookstore's facade features a simple glass design with text. Visitors enter through a dark brown lobby with scattered "lampshade-shaped bookshelves" that create a mystical ambience.
As readers descend the stairs, they'll notice conical bookshelves at varying heights and mirrored ceilings. Taking inspiration from the stepwells seen in ancient India, these spaces allow for easy movement around the store and offer visitors an opportunity to explore different sections.
Some of the shelves have doorways slotted between them, creating a maze that is sure to attract book lovers and architectural enthusiasts alike. Mirrored floors and a recurring mirror ceiling also add a sense of movement to the space, evoking the feeling of an impossible world that is reminiscent of Dutch artist M.C. Escher's fever dream Relativity (1953).
On the opposite corner of the bookstore, a children's reading room is also found. Here, timber bookshelves that look like houses and clouds arrange to form a whimsical depiction of the rural outskirts of Chongqing.
In the main hall, a series of stairs are positioned in a way that makes the space appear as though they're "mountain-shaped" - an optical illusion that's sure to get the attention of shoppers. A mirrored ceiling in the main hall doubles the illusion by making the ceiling look like the floor and vice versa.
Despite all the online competition, a physical store can survive if it offers an engaging experience that encourages visitors to browse, gather knowledge and challenge dogmatic beliefs. In the end, it's up to a bookstore's owners and staff to create memorable in-store experiences that aren't just gimmicky.
