Shanghai-based architect Li Xiang of X+Living is behind the design of this 10,800-square-foot Zhongshuge Bookstore in Hangzhou’s bustling commercial center, Star Avenue. She designed the store in partnership with renowned bookstore owner and publisher Jin Hao, who opened his first Zhongshuge in 2010 after quitting his teaching job to pursue his dream of becoming a book publisher.
The bookstore is a mind-bending experience that’s been dubbed a “city of books” and features a jaw-dropping, snaking staircase. This spine-tingling zig-zag spiral staircase is the brainchild of X+Living and doubles as a giant art installation, bringing a sense of wonder to the entire place.
Visitors enter a tunnel-like room that’s dotted with black-mirrored floors and ceilings, allowing them to imagine that they’re walking through a river. Continuing into the lobby, they’ll find themselves surrounded by circular pillars that are integrated with bookshelves. Each of these pillars rises to the ceiling and has its own unique bookshelf – the whole space seems like a floating space of knowledge.
Across the world, Zhongshuge has become a symbol of a brand that blends design and culture together to create an incredibly immersive reading experience. The company’s Yangzhou and Hangzhou stores are no exception.
In a city where the forests and famed West Lake have long been inspirations for Chinese artists, Hangzhou’s book store is awash in forest-inspired design elements. In Yangzhou, a town that is renowned for its water, the mirrored flooring and black-colored rooms create the illusion of flowing water.
The design aims to bring together Hangzhou’s natural beauty with the city’s cultural legacy and modern technology. The company’s upcoming Yangzhou branch is another example of the team’s creative approach, combining a contemporary aesthetic with traditional design elements.
