Book publishing is a big business in India and the sector forms 70% of the overall book market. It is estimated that there are about 80,000 new titles published in 24 languages every year.
The majority of the publishers in India are small players and family owned units. The book industry is growing at a fast pace and is expected to continue doing so.
2. Venad Printing And Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.
The Venad kingdom was one of the major principalities in medieval and early modern Kerala, based at Kollam/Quilon. Its main activity was the exchange of spices and other products with Middle Eastern and Chinese merchants. It ruled parts of Trivandrum and Alleppey districts.
Its ancient history can be dated to the 1st century CE, when it was ruled by the Chera dynasty (Chera-Perumal) and emerged as an independent principality. It was eventually absorbed into the Travancore kingdom during the 18th century.
In the medieval period, Venad was a powerful kingdom and the Cheras were its ruling class. The kingdom dominated the Malabar coast and its northern regions. The rulers of Venad owed their prominence to the importance of trade with Middle East and China and the important role played by Kollam, its capital, in this exchange.
According to Sulaiman al-Tajir, the Venad kingdom was a centre of trade with China during the 9th century CE. Marco Polo also visited the kingdom of Venad and recorded its trading activities in his book.
The ancient political and cultural history of Venad was almost entirely independent from that of the rest of Kerala. Its most prominent ruler, Ravi Varma Kulasekhara (1312-1316), carried out military raids to Pandya and Chola lands and was one of the most ambitious and successful of all the Chera kings.
It ruled the region around Trivandrum and Alleppey, as well as the broader region of southern Kerala, in which it was an autonomous chiefdom (“nadu”). The Cheras were descended from a line of eminent rulers from the Ay country, a small tribal group that controlled much of the region during the early historic period.
During the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Venad was overrun by Muslims, resulting in the famous “Attingal Outbreak” of 1721. In this time, the English East India Company established a factory in Vizhinjam and a fort at Ajengo. The earliest European arrival in Kollam was the Portuguese, who established a trade center at Kappad in 1498 during the Age of Discovery.
The novel presents the history and politics of Venad through the council of Ettuveettil Pillas, the claim of throne by Padmanabhan Thambi, the coup attempt and the patriotic conduct of Subhadra. The story is intertwined with romance through the love story of Ananthapadmanabhan and Parukutty, as well as the unrequited love of Zulaikha.

DC Books, as the name suggests is a renowned book publishing firm. The company was started in 1974 by Dominic Chacko Kizhakemuri, who is better known as DC, and it has since earned a well-deserved reputation for being one of the premier names in Indian publishing. It is regarded as the first ISO certified book industry in India, and is home to a variety of award winning publications including Education Insider, Future Medicine, Emerging Kerala and Pachakuthira.

One of the most unique book publishing organizations in Malappuram is the Sahitya Pravarthaka Co-operative Society. This organization was founded in 1945 and has become a pillar of Malayalam literature.
The organization was started by a group of writers with the aim of promoting Malayalam and also working for the welfare of the writers. It publishes a wide variety of literary works including fiction, non-fiction and children’s books in Malayalam.
SPCS is a one-of-a-kind organization that has been around for 78 years and has published over 75% of the best works produced by Malayalam writers in that period. Their publications include novels, plays, poems and essay-collections written by their members as well as translations from foreign languages into Malayalam.
They have published a number of famous authors in Malayalam like O V Vijayan, K R Meera and Madhavi Kutty. Their titles have crossed the 100,000 mark and still remain bestsellers.
Besides this, they have a chain of retail outlets throughout South India and in the Middle East. They are also a member of the Federation of Indian Publishers and have won awards for their quality publications.
DC Kizhakemuri, the founder of the Society, was a writer, columnist and editor of several publications. He also worked for the welfare of the Malayalam literary community and opened a bookstore called the National Book Stall.
He was a major contributor to the development of Malayalam literature and was one of the first movers in the resurgence of Kerala as a cultural powerhouse. He founded the Sahitya Pravarthaka (Writers) Co-operative Society, which was the first of its kind in Asia.
The Society is based in Kottayam and was established in 1945 with an initial capital of Rs. 120. The Society has been a pioneer in publishing Malayalam literature and has helped the writers to become self-confident and earn a decent income.
Another important aspect of the Society is that it is a cooperative. The members share the cost of all purchases and distribution. This enables the Society to be efficient in its operations.
The Society has published a number of books in Malayalam, including the novel Adyakala Malayalanoval. The novel has received positive to mixed reviews and is a landmark in Malayalam literature. It is an early work that explores the historical background of Malayalam.
