However, the cost of occupying a stand at book fairs can be high for independent publishers. So, the Feria del Libro Independiente was created to help those publishers display their books individually at a more affordable fair.
Sexto Piso
Sexto Piso is one of the top book publishers in Mexico City, and their selection of books includes titles that you won’t find anywhere else. They have an impressive selection of Spanish and Mexican translated titles, as well as some of the best Mexican fiction writers around.

Trilce
Trilce is an independent publishing house that specializes in books on popular culture, contemporary art and children’s books. It is a member of Alianza de Editoriales Mexicanas Independientes, an alliance of noncommercial publishing houses. The publisher also participates in the annual Feria del Libro Independiente, a book fair featuring independent publishing houses that takes place at the Museo de Arte de Zapopan and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico.
As part of the book fair, publishers display their books in a stand for three to four days. Historically, they pooled funds to share a stand but have found it more affordable to do so individually. Among other benefits, publishers can get more visibility at the fair and earn money from sales to independent bookstores.
The book fair is a good opportunity for authors and readers to find new books, says Marina Ruiz, publisher of Astrolabio. Her company publishes books that are handmade, object books or books that authors design from the covers to the printing techniques. She says there is a market hungry for these types of books.
In addition to selling directly at the book fair, independent publishing houses sell their titles through bookstores and online sales, according to Cecilia Moreno, an associate editor with Alianza de Editoriales Mexicanas Independentes. But independent publishers are limited in how they can distribute their books, as bookstores charge high percentages of the sale and require contracts to buy books from them, according to Moreno.
Another problem is that independent publishing companies don’t have much capital. It’s difficult for them to obtain the necessary contracts to sell their books to bookstores or to obtain government contracts to buy books, says Moreno. She also points out that they are unable to compete with public and private publishing houses, which have greater resources than independent publishers do.
Despite these challenges, Mexico is still an important book publishing country. The country has a long tradition of producing books that have international appeal. In 2014, 24,000 new books were published in Mexico, with 30% of them re-editions. These books were primarily Spanish language and Latin American literature, but other languages such as French and Russian were also represented.
Biblioteca Nacional de Mexico
