Top Book Publishers in Shijiazhuang

The Chinese book market has a wide range of publishers. Some are regionally based with editing, designing and printing done locally while others have branches that develop business outside their home bases.

Social science books represent a significant share of the book market in China. There are thousands of titles on philosophy, politics, economics, military affairs, languages and history.

1. People’s Literature Publishing House

People’s Literature Publishing House, or PLPH, is one of the largest national publishing institutions in China. Founded in 1951, it publishes a huge number of books and literary works written by Chinese authors and translated from other languages. The company has a great reputation among readers and has won many awards. It has also established good business relationships with overseas institutions and copyright agencies.

Currently, it has more than a dozen branches around the country, including its main headquarters in Beijing. These include the Hainan Publishing House, Hebei Education Press, Jieli Publishing House, Yangtze River Literature and Art Publishing House, Guangxi Normal University Press, Hunan Fine Arts Publishing House, and Lijiang Publishing House.

Its publishing program includes scholarly publications, editions of classical Chinese literature and dictionaries. It also has an extensive line of paperbacks, as well as high-quality reprints.

In addition, PLPH has published many art books and is known for its collection of 13 important Buddhist texts. In 1993, it was awarded the honorary title of “national outstanding press” by the Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of China and General Administration of Press and Publication.

The company also produces many magazines and journals and has a special sub brand for children’s books. It has also introduced popular foreign novels such as the Harry Potter series and other books that have become international bestsellers.

PLPH is also one of the few Chinese publishers that has successfully launched Disney’s Mickey Mouse magazine. The biweekly magazine, which was a joint venture with the People’s Posts and Telecommunications Publishing House, has a monthly sales of 700,000 copies.

2. Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House

Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House is a large publisher of general interest books with a focus on readers in small towns and the countryside. This publisher has established a strong reputation for its titles that are practical, informative, and easy to understand. Its annual sales are over RMB200 million.

It publishes books in several areas including health, horticulture, animal husbandry, cooking, sewing, and knitting. Its most successful titles on raising pigs sold over seven million copies.

This publisher has a very broad back catalog with 3,000 titles in print. It also has an extensive number of established book series in practical fields and popular sciences.

A major market for reference and teaching supplements is the educational sector. The major forces in this field are Longman Book Company, Jilin Education Publishing House, Shaanxi Normal University Press, Northeast Normal University Press, Guangxi Normal University Press, Beijing Normal University Press, and Jiangsu Education Publishing House.

The medical field is another major area of professional publishing in China. In 2001, the medical books industry had annual gross sales of RMB1 billion. Among the leading publishers in this field are China Light Industry Press, People’s Medical Publishing House, and Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers.

Besides books on the natural science, engineering, and electronics sectors, medical and health-related books are an important category in professional publishing. They are the second largest group of natural science titles in terms of total output with an annual sales volume of over RMB1 billion.

Other important markets for professional books are art, machine building and architecture, business, computer technology, and management. In addition to these categories, other important areas include tourism and travel, health, and lifestyle.

3. China Light Industry Press

In the past, Chinese publishers tended to operate from their home base, editing, designing, and printing all localized. However, in recent years, as the country has transitioned to a market economy, many provincial educational publishers have had to alter their publishing strategies.

Among those who have adapted well are the Hebei Education Press, Liaoning Education Press, Hubei Education Press, Jiangsu Education Publishing House, Beijing Normal University Press, and East China Normal University Press. They have successfully developed textbooks for kindergarten, elementary and high schools to colleges and universities. They have also produced ELHI (Elementary, Lower High School, and Intermediate) teaching materials catering to local needs.

Another area of major interest for Chinese book publishers is classics, which encompass books on ancient China and other historical records. There are between 100,000 and 150,000 ancient books still preserved in the country. There are 22 publishing houses and 600 editors specializing in this area.

There are also thousands of titles on literature and art, which make up a large portion of the national book market. These include fiction, children’s books, and non-fiction titles. They account for 6% of the total book market and generate RMB240 million in sales annually.

The medical and health field is another large segment of the book market, with over 7,100 medical titles published each year. These titles range from clinical medicine, illustrated plates and textbooks to preventive medicine and pharmaceuticals.

While the medical book market has not been as competitive as in the past, it is slowly catching up to other industries and is now the leading category of professional book titles with annual sales of RMB1 billion. The People’s Medical Publishing House alone captures half of the market and is the most important publisher in this category.

4. China Travel & Tourism Press

The China Travel & Tourism Press, based in Beijing, is the country’s largest publisher of travel guides and other tourism-related publications. Its award-winning books are designed to educate and entertain Chinese travellers of all ages and interest levels.

The company’s flagship magazine, “China Touring”, is a glossy publication that showcases the many wonders of China in a range of articles and visual styles. The magazine features brilliant photographs and informative, vivid articles that will fascinate even the most jaded of travelers.

In addition to its flagship publication, the company also produces the China Travel Guide, which is a comprehensive guide to some of the most popular and interesting sights in the country. This 20,000-page publication contains a wealth of travel guides to the most famous landmarks and cultural attractions, with plenty of evocative photography that will leave visitors inspired and awed.

Aside from the impressive book, the company has a well-designed website that provides a wealth of information about travel in China. The site is a good resource for information on hotels, restaurants, transportation and other services, as well as the latest developments in the country’s tourism industry.

The company also produces the China Outbound Tourism Handbook 2023, which aptly encapsulates the state of the art in the tourism and hospitality industries – and is the product of decades of research and engagement with the world’s leading players in the field. The guide is a comprehensive look at the key travel, technology, fashion, branding, retail, marketing and lifestyle trends that will shape the future of Chinese outbound tourism.

5. Shanghai Century Publishing Group

The Chinese book industry has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years, with the emergence of several prominent publishers from different publishing sectors. These are the Shanghai Century Publishing Group, Guangdong Publishing Group, Liaoning Publishing Group, Beijing Publishing Group, China Sciences Publishing Group, Shandong General Publishing House, Jiangsu Publishing Group, Zhejiang Publishing Group, Sichuan Publishing Group, Henan Publishing Group, and Hebei Education Press.

In addition to book publishing, Chinese book publishers also offer other services, including book distribution, electronic content production and publication, and audio and video products. These services help companies to promote their books and increase sales, and are often essential in helping book publishers compete against international competitors.

Reference and language learning books represent the largest share of the overall educational book market. They include dictionaries, encyclopedias, and reference guides. Some of the most popular language reference books are the Xinhua Dictionary, Ci Hai (Chinese Idioms), and Ci Yuan (Word Origins).

Science books also have a strong share in the educational book market. In recent years, publishers have made a significant effort to acquire the translation rights for books by famous authors such as Stephen Hawking. In particular, Hunan Science & Technology Press has translated and published several books by the British scientist, which have done well in the Chinese mainland.

Other science books that have had excellent sales are The Universe in a Nutshell and A Brief History of Time by the American scientist Stephen W. Hawking, both of which have sold 150,000 copies each.

Other popular book series include the Disney’s Mickey Mouse comic books, which have been especially successful in the Chinese mainland. This is because of the popularity of the cartoon character, and the fact that most readers in this country are younger than Americans and Europeans.
