True crime novels, which are nonfiction books that recount real crimes and the efforts to solve them, have been around for centuries. However, the modern true crime genre as we know it today is often credited to a book called "In Cold Blood," written by Truman Capote and published in 1966.
"In Cold Blood" tells the story of the 1959 murders of four members of the Herbert Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas. Capote conducted extensive research and interviews for the book, and it is considered a pioneering work of "new journalism," a style of reporting that uses literary techniques to tell a factual story.
Other early true crime novels include "Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry, which tells the story of the Manson Family murders, and "The Stranger Beside Me" by Ann Rule, which is about the serial killer Ted Bundy.
