D-Day: The Role of African American Troops

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

D-Day, the Normandy invasion, was a crucial operation in World War II that involved the participation of African American troops. Despite facing discrimination and racism in the United States, African American soldiers played a crucial role in the operation and helped pave the way for the eventual desegregation of the armed forces.

African American soldiers were not initially allowed to participate in the invasion as they were mostly assigned to support roles such as cooks, mechanics, and clerks. However, a significant number of African American soldiers were able to serve in combat units such as the 761st Tank Battalion and the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion.

The 761st Tank Battalion was an all-African American tank unit that landed in Normandy on D-Day+1. The unit was the first African American tank unit to see combat in World War II. The unit faced discrimination from both the German and American side, but they performed their duties with distinction and bravery.

The 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion was an all-African American anti-aircraft unit that was responsible for protecting the troops and equipment on the beach. The unit faced similar discrimination as the 761st tank battalion, but they performed their duties with distinction and bravery.

African American troops also served in other units such as the 92nd Infantry Division, the only African American division to see combat in Europe during World War II. These troops faced discrimination and racism from both the German and American side.
