Who was the first African American publisher?

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

The first African American publisher in the United States was John Henrik Clarke, who was born in 1915 in Union Springs, Alabama. Clarke was a historian, scholar, and writer who was known for his work on African and African American history and culture. In the 1960s, Clarke founded the publishing company African Heritage Press, which was the first African American-owned and operated publishing company in the United States.

African Heritage Press published a wide range of books and other materials, including books by Clarke and other Black writers, as well as books on African and African American history and culture. The company was known for its commitment to promoting the work of Black writers and for its efforts to promote a more accurate and inclusive understanding of African and African American history.

It is worth noting that African Heritage Press was not the first publishing company to publish the work of African American writers, as many African American writers have been published by other companies throughout history. However, African Heritage Press was the first African American-owned and operated publishing company in the United States, and it played a significant role in promoting the work of Black writers and in advancing a more inclusive and accurate understanding of African and African American history.
