About the Country

Cyprus is an island country located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and is located about 40 miles south of Turkey and 60 miles west of Syria. The population is around 1.2 million people and the capital and largest city is Nicosia. The official languages are Greek and Turkish and the currency is the Euro.

Cyprus has a long and complex history, shaped by its strategic location and its position as a crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa. The island has been settled by a variety of civilizations over the centuries, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Ottomans. In 1960, Cyprus gained independence from the UK and became a republic.

The island is divided between the Republic of Cyprus, which is internationally recognized and a member of the European Union, and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is only recognized by Turkey. This division has been a source of tension and conflict for many years, and negotiations to reunify the island are ongoing.

Cyprus is known for its natural beauty, including its beaches, forests, and mountains. The island is also known for its rich cultural heritage, which includes ancient Greek and Roman ruins, medieval castles and monasteries, and Ottoman-era architecture.
